Title: Extended Double Lattice BRST, Curci-Ferrari Mass and the Neuberger Problem

Abstract

We present Extended Double BRST on the lattice and extend the Neuberger problem to include the ghost/anti-ghost symmetric formulation of the non-linear covariant Curci-Ferrari (CF) gauges. We then show how a CF mass regulates the 0/0 indeterminate form of physical observables, as observed by Neuberger, and discuss the gauge parameter and mass dependence of the model.

  • We present the Curci-Ferrari model on the lattice. In the massless case the topological interpretation of this model with its double Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) symmetry relates to the Neuberger 0/0 problem which we extend to include the ghost/antighost symmetric formulation of the nonlinear-covariant Curci-Ferrari gauges on the lattice. The introduction of a Curci-Ferrari mass term, however, serves to regulate the 0/0 indeterminate form of physical observables observed by Neuberger. While such a mass m decontracts the double BRST/anti-BRST algebra, which is well known to result in a loss of unitarity, observables can be meaningfully defined in the limit m{yields}0 via l'Hospital'smore » rule. At finite m, the topological nature of the partition function used as the gauge-fixing device seems lost. We discuss the gauge parameter {xi} and mass m dependence of the model and show how both cancel when m{identical_to}m({xi}) is appropriately adjusted with {xi}.« less
  • In this paper, the Batalin-Vilkovisky antifield action for the BF theories is constructed by means of the extended form method. The BRST invariant BV antifield action is directly written down by making use of the extended forms that involve all the required ghosts and antifields.
  • Generating equations of the Lagrangian version of the extended-BRST-covariant quantization are solved for irreducible gauge theories using the technique of expansion in auxiliary fields. Solutions correct to the third order inclusive are constructed. 16 refs.
  • A superspace formulation for the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism (also called field-antifield quantization) with extended BRST invariance (BRST and anti-BRST invariance) for gauge theories with a closed algebra is presented. In contrast with a recent formulation, where only BRST invariance holds off shell, two collective sets of fields are introduced and an off-shell realizaiton of the extended algebra in a superspace with two Grassmann coordinates is obtained.   • It is shown that the quantization of the chiral Schwinger model in the f fields and antifields, where the master equation has a local solution. The Wess-Zumino term is generated in this way, avoiding the use of nonlocal expressions. The nilpotency of the new BRST charge is proven explicitly.
