Physics and Challenges of the Electron Ion Collider

The electron ion collider (EIC) has been recently identified by the US nuclear physics community in its long range plan, to be the most important future experimental facility for the precision study of QCD and the spin structure of the nucleon. While the physics of this is exciting and compelling, the technology that needs to be developed to realize the science remains challenging. Several items have been identified which will need R and D and will be pursued in the near future. Measurement of lepton and hadron or light nuclear beam polarization is one of those daunting tasks, which need immediate and high level of attention to completely realize the promised science of the EIC. This article will summarize the science goals and identify the polarimetry and some other detector related challenges posed by this next generation QCD facility.
