Title: Countermeasures for X-ray Intensity Fluctuation on BL11XU at SPring-8

Abstract

This paper reports that the countermeasures against X-ray intensity fluctuation have been developed on BL11XU at SPring-8. Observed X-ray intensity fluctuation might be caused from mechanical vibrations of monochromator crystals. So, we measured the vibrations under various conditions to identify vibration sources and took countermeasures against the mechanical vibrations. As a result, the methods successfully removed the mechanical vibrations and the X-ray intensity fluctuation was reduced to about half.

  • We report x-ray intensity fluctuation spectroscopy measurements of the equilibrium dynamics of polymer micelle liquids, composed of polystyrene-polyisoprene block copolymer micelles within a polystyrene homopolymer matrix. The equilibrium dynamics were investigated for times between one and several hundred seconds, and for wave vectors from 0.003 to 0.015 A{sup -1}, far beyond wave vectors that can be studied with visible light.   • X-ray intensity fluctuation spectroscopy has been used to examine the coarsening kinetics in the classic long-period superlattice Cu-Pd alloy. The evolution of the speckle intensity was examined near the centers of both a superlattice peak (associated with local L1{sub 2} order) and a satellite peak (associated with one-dimensional antiphase correlations). The decay of the two-time correlation function C(t{sub 1},t{sub 2},q) was independent of the direction examined and was similar for the superlattice and satellite peaks. In agreement with published Langevin theory and simulations, the decay time {tau} of the two-time correlation function increases linearly with average time t{sub m}=(t{sub 1}+t{submore » 2})/2. It is relatively independent of the wave vector near the peak centers. However, {tau} increases much more slowly with increasing t{sub m} than is expected.« less

  • In order to establish technology for future X-ray FEL at 1 Angstrom wavelength region, RIKEN/SPring-8 started SCSS-project in 2002. It is a soft X-ray SASE FEL machine aiming at demonstrating FEL operation below 10 nm wavelength with 1 GeV electron beam. Using the short period in-vacuum undulator and the high gradient C-band main accelerator, the machine becomes compact, and fits within a 100 m long tunnel, so that it was named SCSS: SPring-8 Compact SASE Source. To saturate FEL within 25 m long undulator line, we need a high quality beam: r.m.s normalized emittance should be below 2 {pi}-mm-mrad (r.m.smore » normalized) with 2 kA peak current. To generate this beam, we are developing a HV pulse gun using thermionic cathode (CeB6 single crystal) and sub-harmonic buncher system. In 2003, we start beam test of HV gun and high power test of the C-band accelerator. The first FEL operation is scheduled in 2006 at 100-10 nm wavelength.« less
