Title: Study of inclusive B{sup -} and B{sup 0} decays to flavor-tagged D, D{sub s}, and {lambda}{sub c}{sup +}

Abstract

We report on a study of inclusive B{sup -} and B{sup 0} meson decays to D{sup 0}X, D{sup 0}X, D{sup +}X, D{sup -}X, D{sub s}{sup +}X, D{sub s}{sup -}X, {lambda}{sub c}{sup +}X, {lambda}{sub c}{sup -}X, based on a sample of 231x10{sup 6} BB events recorded with the BABAR detector at the {upsilon}(4S) resonance. Events are selected by completely reconstructing one B and searching for a reconstructed charm particle in the rest of the event. From the measured branching fractions of these decays, we infer the number of charm and anticharm particles per B decay, separately for charged and neutral parents. We derive the total charm yield per B{sup -} decay, n{sub c}{sup -}=1.208{+-}0.023{+-}0.040{sub -0.029}{sup +0.035}, and per B{sup 0} decay, n{sub c}{sup 0}=1.203{+-}0.030{+-}0.034{sub -0.035}{sup +0.044} where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third reflects the charm branching-fraction uncertainties. We also present the charm momentum distributions measured in the B rest frame.

  • In the leading order of the (1/m{sub b})-expansion in HQET the dominant contribution to the semi-inclusive decays of polarized {lambda}{sub b} baryons into the charm-strangeness mesons D{sub s} and D{sub s}* is given by the partonic process b({up_arrow}){yields}c+(D{sub s}{sup -},D{sub s}*{sup -}). Using standard values for the parameters of the process one expects a rather large branching ratio of {approx_equal}8% into these two channels. In the factorization approximation the semi-inclusive decay of a polarized {lambda}{sub b} is governed by three unpolarized and four polarized structure functions for which we determine the nonperturbative O(1/m{sub b}{sup 2}) corrections and the O({alpha}{sub s})more » radiative corrections. We find that the perturbative and nonperturbative corrections amount to {approx_equal}10% and {approx_equal}3%, respectively. The seven structure functions can be measured through an analysis of the joint decay distributions of the process involving the polarization of the {lambda}{sub b} and the decays D{sub s}*{sup -}{yields}D{sub s}{sup -}+{gamma} and D{sub s}*{sup -}{yields}D{sub s}{sup -}+{pi}{sup 0} for which we provide explicit forms. We also provide numerical results for the Cabibbo-suppressed semi-inclusive decays {lambda}{sub b}{yields}X{sub u}+(D{sub s},D{sub s}*)« less
  • We present the first observation of the baryon decay {lambda}{sub b}{sup 0}{yields}{lambda}{sub c}{sup +}{pi}{sup -} followed by {lambda}{sub c}{sup +}{yields}pK{sup -}{pi}{sup +} in 106 pb{sup -1} pp collisions at {radical}(s)=1.96 TeV in the CDF experiment. In order to reduce systematic error, the measured rate for {lambda}{sub b}{sup 0} decay is normalized to the kinematically similar meson decay B{sup 0}{yields}D{sup +}{pi}{sup -} followed by D{sup +}{yields}{pi}{sup +}K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}. We report the ratio of production cross sections ({sigma}) times the ratio of branching fractions (B) for the momentum region integrated above p{sub T}>6 GeV/c and pseudorapidity range |{eta}|<1.3: {sigma}(pp{yields}{lambda}{sub b}{sup 0}X)/{sigma}(pp{yields}B{supmore » 0}X)xB({lambda}{sub b}{sup 0}{yields}{lambda}{sub c}{sup =} +{pi}{sup -})/B(B{sup 0}{yields}D{sup +}{pi}{sup -})=0.82{+-} 0.08(stat){+-}0.11(syst){+-}0.22[B({lambda}{sub c}{sup +}{yields}pK{sup -}{pi}{sup +})].« less
