Title: Conformal gravity from the AdS/CFT mechanism

Abstract

We explicitly calculate the induced gravity theory at the boundary of an asymptotically anti-de Sitter five dimensional Einstein gravity. We also display the action that encodes the dynamics of radial diffeomorphisms. It is found that the induced theory is a four dimensional conformal gravity plus a scalar field. This calculation confirms some previous results found by a different approach.

  • In the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence we discuss the gravity dual of a high energy collision in a strongly coupled N=4 SYM gauge theory. We suggest a setting in which two colliding objects are made of nondynamical heavy quarks and antiquarks, which allows one to treat the process in classical string approximation. Collision 'debris' consist of closed as well as open strings. If the latter have ends on two outgoing charges, they are being 'stretched' along the collision axes. We discuss motion in AdS of some simple objects first--massless and massive particles--and then focus on open strings. We studymore » the latter in considerable detail, concluding that they rapidly become 'rectangular' in proper time-spatial rapidity {tau}-y coordinates with well separated fragmentation part and a near-free-falling rapidity-independent central part. Assuming that in the collisions of 'walls' of charges multiple stretching strings are created, we also consider the motion of a 3D stretching membrane. We then argue that a complete solution can be approximated by two different vacuum solutions of Einstein equations, with matter membrane separating them. We identify one of these solutions with a Janik-Peschanski stretching black hole solution, and show that all objects approach its (retreating) horizon in a universal manner.« less
  • The AdS/CFT correspondence defines a sector with universal strongly coupled dynamics in the field theory as the dual of pure gravity in AdS described by Einstein's equation with a negative cosmological constant. We explain here, from the field-theoretic viewpoint how the dynamics in this sector gets determined by the expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor alone. We first show that the Boltzmann equation has very special solutions which could be functionally completely determined in terms of the energy-momentum tensor alone. We call these solutions conservative solutions. We indicate why conservative solutions should also exist when we refine this kinetic descriptionmore » to go closer to the exact microscopic theory or even move away from the regime of weak coupling so that no kinetic description could be employed. We argue that these conservative solutions form the universal sector dual to pure gravity at strong coupling and large N. Based on this observation, we propose a regularity condition on the energy-momentum tensor so that the dual solution in pure gravity has a smooth future horizon. We also study if irreversibility emerges only at long time scales of observation, unlike the case of the Boltzmann equation.« less
  • Compactification of type IIB superstring on an AdS{sub 5}{times}S{sup 5}/{Gamma} background leads to SU(N) gauge field theories with prescribed matter representations. In the {close_quote}t Hooft limit of large {ital N} such theories are conformally finite. For finite {ital N} and broken supersymmetry (N=0) I derive the constraints to be two-loop conformal and examine the consequences for a wide choice of {Gamma} and its embedding {Gamma}{contained_in}C{sup 3}({contains}S{sup 5}). {copyright} {ital 1999} {ital The American Physical Society}
  • Galilean conformal algebra (GCA) is an Inoenue-Wigner (IW) contraction of a conformal algebra, while Newton-Hooke string algebra is an IW contraction of an Anti-de Sitter (AdS) algebra, which is the isometry of an AdS space. It is shown that the GCA is a boundary realization of the Newton-Hooke string algebra in the bulk AdS. The string lies along the direction transverse to the boundary, and the worldsheet is AdS{sub 2}. The one-dimensional conformal symmetry so(2,1) and rotational symmetry so(d) contained in the GCA are realized as the symmetry on the AdS{sub 2} string worldsheet and rotational symmetry in the spacemore » transverse to the AdS{sub 2} in AdS{sub d+2}, respectively. It follows from this correspondence that 32 supersymmetric GCAs can be derived as IW contractions of superconformal algebras, psu(2,2|4), osp(8|4), and osp(8*|4). We also derive less supersymmetric GCAs from su(2,2|2), osp(4|4), osp(2|4), and osp(8*|2)« less
  • In the framework of gauge invariant Stueckelberg approach, totally symmetric arbitrary spin shadow fields in flat space-time of dimension greater than or equal to four are studied. Gauge invariant two-point vertices for such shadow fields are obtained. We demonstrate that, in Stueckelberg gauge frame, these gauge invariant vertices become the standard two-point vertices of CFT. Light-cone gauge two-point vertices of the shadow fields are also obtained. AdS/CFT correspondence for the shadow fields and the non-normalizable solutions of free massless totally symmetric arbitrary spin AdS fields is studied. AdS fields are considered in a modified de Donder gauge and this simplifiesmore » considerably the study of AdS/CFT correspondence. We demonstrate that the bulk action, when it is evaluated on solution of the Dirichlet problem, leads to the two-point gauge invariant vertex of shadow field. Also we show that the bulk action evaluated on solution of the Dirichlet problem leads to new description of conformal fields. The new description involves Stueckelberg gauge symmetries and gives simple higher-derivative Lagrangian for the conformal arbitrary spin field. In the Stueckelberg gauge frame, our Lagrangian becomes the standard Lagrangian of conformal field. Light-cone gauge Lagrangian of the arbitrary spin conformal field is also obtained.« less
