The electrochemical property and magnetic property of compound 1 have been studied. - Graphical abstract: The boxlike structure of compound 1 with cavity is designed from [{l_brace}Ni(en){sub 2}{r_brace}{sub 4}(4,4'-bipy){sub 4}{l_brace}Ni(H{sub 2}O){sub 2}{r_brace}] sheets pillared by [{alpha}-As{sub 8}V{sub 14}O{sub 42}] clusters, which represents the first mixed-organic ligand-decorated tetrameric As-V-O cluster.

Both 1 and 2 have polynuclear anions of [Bi{sub 6}I{sub 22}]{sup 4-} to build up the inorganic layers and substituted 1,2,4-triazoles as the organic layers. Hybrid 3 consists of two BiI{sub 5} square pyramids as inorganic layers. There exist hydrogen bondings and I...;I interactions in the structures of 1, 2 and 3. Optical absorption spectra of 1, 2 and 3 reveal the presence ofmore » sharp optical gaps of 1.77, 1.77 and 2.07 eV, respectively, suggesting that these materials behave as semiconductors. - Graphical abstract: The reactions of two kinds of the substituted 1,2,4-triazoles with BiI{sub 3} yielded three layered inorganic-organic hybrids [HL1]{sub 4}[Bi{sub 6}I{sub 22}].[L1]{sub 4}.4H{sub 2}O (1), [HL2]{sub 4}[Bi{sub 6}I{sub 22}].6H{sub 2}O (2), [HL2]{sub 2}[Bi{sub 2}I{sub 8}].[L2]{sub 2} (3) with optical gaps of 1.77, 1.77 and 2.07 eV, respectively. Among them, compound 1 displays a discrete supramolecular structure, compound 2 shows a chainlike structure with chloro-copper complexes as counteranions, and compoundsmore » 3 and 4 are isomorphic and exhibit unique 3D open frameworks with lattice water molecules residing in the channels. The compounds 3 and 4 represent the first example of 3D organic-inorganic hybrid compounds in the TMs/2,2'-bpy/POMs system. Investigation of the reaction conditions reveals that the geometry and size of the anions together with its coordinating abilities to the metal centers have a decisive influence on both the composition and the dimensionality of the final compounds. - Graphical Abstract: Four organic-inorganic hybrids based on Anderson-type polyoxoanions have been synthesized.
