Title: Search for the {phi}-N bound state from {phi} meson subthreshold production

Abstract

The subthreshold photoproduction of {phi} mesons from heavy nuclear targets has been suggested as a candidate to search for the {phi}-N bound state, a quantum chromodynamics molecular state. In this Brief Report, we present detailed Monte Carlo studies to demonstrate the feasibility of this technique. Further, we show that proton-induced subthreshold production of {phi} meson from heavy nuclear targets is also suitable for such a search.

  • We perform calculations for the production of {phi} mesons in nuclei at energies just above threshold and study the A dependence of the cross section. We use results for the {phi} self-energy in the medium obtained within a chiral unitary approach. We find a strong A dependence which is tied to the distortion of the incident proton and to the absorption of the {phi} on its way out of the nucleus. The effect of this latter process reduces the cross section by about a factor of 2 in heavy nuclei, proving that the A dependence of the cross section bearsmore » valuable information on the {phi} width in the nuclear medium. Calculations are done for energies accessible in an experimental facility like COSY.« less
  • A sample of 1200 phi mesons produced in the Zweig-rule-forbidden reactions ..pi../sup plus-or-minus/N..-->..phiN shows a flat t distribution (slope=1.7 +- 0.2 GeV/sup -2/) and a cross section suppressed by 0.0032 +- 0.0004 relative to ..pi../sup -/p..--> omega..n. Natural-parity-exchange ..omega.. and phi production have similar t dependences, while ..omega.. and phi production by unnatural-parity exchange differ markedly. Interference between the phi and the underlying K-barK S wave indicates substantial nucleon-spin incoherence between the amplitudes for phi and S-wave production.
  • Four separate experiments [A. Etkin et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 41, 784 (1978).][A. Etkin et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 49, 1620 (1982).][A. Etkin et al., Phys. Lett. B 165, 217 (1985).][A. Etkin et al., Phys. Lett. B 201, 568 (1988).] observing the OZI forbidden disconnected reaction {pi}{sup -}p{yields}{phi}{phi}n with increasing statistics were consistent. These experiments, very selectively, completely broke down the OZI suppression by three {phi}{phi} resonances with I{sup G}J{sup PC}=0{sup +}2{sup ++} in the observed mass region 2.038 GeV to 2.600 GeV. The only viable proposed explanation has been that the I{sup G}J{sup PC}=0{sup +}2{sup ++} glueball expected inmore » this mass region caused the hard glue in the disconnection to resonate and very selectively break down the OZI suppression for its quantum numbers only. Recently a pp central production spin analysis found that the f{sub 2}(1950) had a dominant decay mode f{sub 2}(1270){pi}{pi} [D. Barberis et al., Phys. Lett. B 471, 440 (2000).]). We consider if it is related to the {phi}{phi} resonances, and find that it likely is.« less
