The relation between the catalytic activity and physicochemical properties of CuO-ZnO catalysts for the water-gas shift reaction prepared from precursors of different structures was studied. The suggestion has been made that the active surface contains aggregates of octahedrally coordinated Cu{sup 2+} ions at the surface of finely dispersed CuO, metallic copper, or ZnO formed with the participation of OH{sup -} and CO {sup 2-}{sub 3} ligands. The active surface was formed during the incomplete decomposition of the aurichalcite phase in the precursor. Evidently, the active copper species was formed at the metallic copper surface under the action of water vapor and carbon dioxide.
