Title: Measurement of Inclusive D{sub s}, D{sup 0}, and J/{psi} Rates and Determination of the B{sub s}{sup (*)}B{sub s}{sup (*)} Production Fraction in bb Events at the {upsilon}(5S) Resonance

Abstract

The inclusive production of D{sub s}, D{sup 0}, and J/{psi} mesons is studied using a 1.86 fb{sup -1} data sample collected on the {upsilon}(5S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e{sup +}e{sup -} collider. The number of bb events in this {upsilon}(5S) data sample is determined. We measure the branching fractions B({upsilon}(5S){yields}D{sub s}X)/2=(23.6{+-}1.2{+-}3.6)%, B({upsilon}(5S){yields}D{sup 0}X)/2=(53.8{+-}2.0{+-}3.4)%, and B({upsilon}(5S){yields}J/{psi}X)/2=(1.030{+-}0.080{+-}0.067)%. From the D{sub s} and D{sup 0} inclusive branching fractions the ratio f{sub s}=(18.0{+-}1.3{+-}3.2)% of B{sub s}{sup (*)}B{sub s}{sup (*)} to the total bb quark pair production at the {upsilon}(5S) energy is obtained in a model-dependent way.

  • We report the first search for CP-violating decays of the {upsilon}(4S) using a data sample that contains 535x10{sup 6} {upsilon}(4S) mesons with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e{sup +}e{sup -} collider. A partial reconstruction technique is employed to enhance the signal sensitivity. No significant signals were observed. We obtain an upper limit of 4x10{sup -7} at the 90% confidence level for the branching fractions of the CP violating modes, {upsilon}(4S){yields}B{sup 0}B{sup 0}{yields}J/{psi}K{sub S}{sup 0}+J/{psi}({eta}{sub c})K{sub S}{sup 0}. Extrapolating the result, we find that an observation with 5{sigma} significance is expected with a 30 ab{sup -1} data sample, whichmore » is within the reach of a future super B factory.« less
  • We present measurements of the linear polarization amplitudes and the strong relative phases that describe the flavor-untagged decays B{sub d}{sup 0}{yields}J/{psi}K*{sup 0} and B{sub s}{sup 0}{yields}J/{psi}{phi} in the transversity basis. We also measure the mean lifetime {tau}{sub s} of the B{sub s}{sup 0} mass eigenstates and the lifetime ratio {tau}{sub s}/{tau}{sub d}. The analyses are based on approximately 2.8 fb{sup -1} of data recorded with the D0 detector. From our measurements of the angular parameters we conclude that there is no evidence for a deviation from flavor SU(3) symmetry for these decays and that the factorization assumption is not validmore » for the B{sub d}{sup 0}{yields}J/{psi}K*{sup 0} decay.« less
  • We report the first observation of B{sub s}{sup 0}{yields}{psi}(2S){phi} decay in pp collisions at {radical}(s)=1.96 TeV using 360 pb{sup -1} of data collected by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. We observe 20.2{+-}5.0 and 12.3{+-}4.1 B{sub s}{sup 0}{yields}{psi}(2S){phi} candidates, in {psi}(2S){yields}{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -} and {psi}(2S){yields}J/{psi}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -} decay modes, respectively. We present a measurement of the relative branching fraction B(B{sub s}{sup 0}{yields}{psi}(2S){phi})/B(B{sub s}{sup 0}{yields}J/{psi}{phi})=0.52{+-}0.13(stat){+-}0.04= (syst){+-}0.06(BR) using the {psi}(2S){yields}{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -} decay mode.
  • We present a measurement of the time-dependent asymmetry in the rate for {ovr B}{sub d}{sup 0} versus B{sub d}{sup 0} decays to J/{psi}K{sub s}{sup 0}. A nonzero asymmetry would be an indication of CP violation, and within the standard model this may be used to measure the CP-violation parameter sin(2{beta}). A total of 198{+-}17 B{sub d}{sup 0}/{ovr B}{sub d}{sup 0} decays were observed in p{ovr p} collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.8 TeV by the CDF detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. B{sub d}{sup 0} and {ovr B}{sub d}{sup 0} are distinguished by a technique based on charge correlations from hadronization ofmore » the b quark. Our analysis results in sin(2{beta}) = 1.8{+-}1.1(stat){+-}0.3(syst).« less
  • We report on the reconstruction of the decay mode {ital B}{sup 0}{r_arrow}{ital J}/{psi}{ital K}{sup 0}{sub {ital S}} using 19.3 pb{sup {minus}1} of data collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab in {bar {ital pp}} collisions at {radical}{ital s}=1.8 TeV. A signal of 41.8{plus_minus}6.9 events, with a signal-to-background ratio of 9:1, is observed. Three additional decay modes {ital B}{sup +}{r_arrow}{ital J}/{psi}{ital K}{sup +}, {ital B}{sup 0}{r_arrow}{ital J}/{psi}{ital K}{sup *}(892){sup 0}, and {ital B}{sup +}{r_arrow}{ital J}/{psi}{ital K}{sup *}(892){sup +} are reconstructed. We measure three ratios of branching ratios, each one relative to the {ital B}{sup +}{r_arrow}{ital J}/{psi}{ital K}{sup +} mode. We alsomore » report the ratio of decay rates, {Gamma}({ital B}{r_arrow}{ital J}/{psi}{ital K}{sup *})/{Gamma}({ital B}{r_arrow}{ital J}/{psi}{ital K}), for the vector-vector relative to the vector-pseudoscaler modes, to be 1.32{plus_minus}0.23(stat){plus_minus}0.16(syst). {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}« less
