Title: Ultraviolet Properties of Maximal Supergravity

Abstract

We argue that recent results in string perturbation theory indicate that the four-graviton amplitude of four-dimensional N=8 supergravity might be ultraviolet finite up to eight loops. We similarly argue that the h-loop M-graviton amplitude might be finite for h<7+M/2.

  • The coefficient of a potential R{sup 4} counterterm in N = 8 supergravity has been shown previously to vanish in an explicit three-loop calculation. The R{sup 4} term respects N = 8 supersymmetry; hence this result poses the question of whether another symmetry could be responsible for the cancellation of the three-loop divergence. In this article we investigate possible restrictions from the coset symmetry E{sub 7(7)}/SU(8), using a double-soft scalar limit relation derived recently by Arkani-Hamed et al. In order to implement the relation, we make use of the fact that the R{sup 4} term occurs in the low-energy expansionmore » of closed-string tree-level amplitudes. We find that the matrix elements of R{sup 4} that we investigated all obey the double-soft scalar limit relation, suggesting that E{sub 7(7)} is also respected by the R{sup 4} term.« less
  • We investigate static non-Abelian black hole solutions of anti-de Sitter (AdS) Einstein-Yang-Mills-dilaton gravity, which is obtained as a consistent truncation of five-dimensional maximal gauged supergravity. If the dilaton is (consistently) set to zero, the remaining equations of motion, with a spherically-symmetric ansatz, may be derived from a superpotential. The associated first-order equations admit an explicit solution supported by a non-Abelian SU(2) gauge potential, which has a logarithmically growing mass term. In an extremal limit the horizon geometry becomes AdS{sub 2}xS{sup 3}. If the dilaton is also excited, the equations of motion cannot easily be solved explicitly, but we obtain themore » asymptotic form of the more general non-Abelian black holes in this case. An alternative consistent truncation, in which the Yang-Mills fields are set to zero, also admits a description in terms of a superpotential. This allows us to construct explicit wormhole solutions (neutral spherically-symmetric domain walls). These solutions may be generalized to dimensions other than five.« less
  • Motivated by the new higher D-supergravity solutions on intersecting attractors obtained by Ferrara et al. in [Phys. Rev. D 79, 065031 (2009)], we focus in this paper on 8D maximal supergravity with moduli space (SL(3,R)/SO(3))x(SL(2,R)/SO(2)) and study explicitly the attractor mechanism for various configurations of extremal black p-branes (antibranes) with the typical near horizon geometries AdS{sub p+2}xS{sup m}xT{sup 6-p-m} and p=0, 1, 2, 3, 4; 2{<=}m{<=}6. Interpretations in terms of wrapped M2 and M5 branes of the 11D M-theory on 3-torus are also given.
