Title: Mass splittings in {sigma}{sub b} and {sigma}{sub b}*

Abstract

The charged {sigma}{sub b} and {sigma}{sub b}* states have recently been reported by the CDF Collaboration. The relation of their reported charge-averaged masses to expectations based on the quark model is reviewed briefly. A relation is proved among the {delta}I=1 electromagnetic mass differences {sigma}{sub 1}{identical_to}M({sigma}{sup +})-M({sigma}{sup -}), {sigma}{sub 1}*{identical_to}M({sigma}*{sup +})-M({sigma}*{sup -}), {sigma}{sub b1}{identical_to}M({sigma}{sub b}{sup +})-M({sigma}{sub b}{sup -}), and {sigma}{sub b1}*{identical_to}M({sigma}{sub b}*{sup +})-M({sigma}{sub b}*{sup -}). The relation is {sigma}{sub b1}*-{sigma}{sub b1}=(m{sub s}/m{sub b})({sigma}{sub 1}*-{sigma}{sub 1}), leading to the expectation {sigma}{sub b1}*-{sigma}{sub b1}=0.40{+-}0.07 MeV.
