Title: Observation of a Charmed Baryon Decaying to D{sup 0}p at a Mass Near 2.94 GeV/c{sup 2}

Abstract

A search for charmed baryons decaying to D{sup 0}p reveals two states: the {lambda}{sub c}(2880){sup +} baryon and a previously unobserved state at a mass of [2939.8{+-}1.3(stat){+-}1.0(syst)] MeV/c{sup 2} and with an intrinsic width of [17.5{+-}5.2(stat){+-}5.9(syst)] MeV. Consistent and significant signals are observed for the K{sup -}{pi}{sup +} and K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup +} decay modes of the D{sup 0} in 287 fb{sup -1} annihilation data recorded by the BABAR detector at a center-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV. There is no evidence in the D{sup +}p spectrum of doubly charged partners. The mass and intrinsic width of the {lambda}{sub c}(2880){sup +} baryon and relative yield of the two baryons are also measured.

  • Data from the SVD-2 experiment that were obtained at the IHEP accelerator in 70-GeV/c proton-nucleus interactions are analyzed with the aim of searches for an exotic {theta}{sup +} baryon that decays through the pK{sup 0}{sub S} channel. The reaction pN {yields} pK{sup 0}{sub S} + X characterized by a bounded multiplicity of charged secondaries is used for this analysis. A resonance of mass M = 1526 {+-} 3(stat.) {+-} 3(syst.) MeV/c{sup 2} and width {gamma} < 24 MeV/c{sup 2} is observed in the invariant-mass spectrum of the pK{sup 0}{sub S} system at a statistical significance of 5.6{sigma}. The mass andmore » the width of this resonance correspond to the recently found positive-strangeness {theta}{sup +} baryon, which was predicted to be an exotic baryon consisting of five quarks (pentaquark), uudds-bar. The total cross section for the production of a {theta}{sup +} baryon in pA interactions is estimated at a value within the range 30-120 {mu}b for x{sub F} {>=} 0. An analysis of the A dependence of the cross section for {theta}{sup +}-baryon production does not reveal a significant deviation from the A dependence for inelastic events ({approx}A{sup 0.7})« less
  • Using data recorded by the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we report the first observation of an excited charmed baryon decaying into {Xi}{sup 0}{sub {ital c}}{pi}{sup +}. The state has mass difference {ital M}({Xi}{sup 0}{sub {ital c}}{pi}{sup +}){minus}{ital M}({Xi}{sup 0}{sub {ital c}}) of 174.3{plus_minus}0.5{plus_minus}1.0 MeV/{ital c}{sup 2}, and a width of {lt}3.1 MeV/{ital c}{sup 2} (90{percent} confidence level limit). We identify the new state as the {Xi}{sub {ital c}}{sup {asterisk}+}, the isospin partner of the recently discovered {Xi}{sub {ital c}}{sup {asterisk}0}. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
