Title: Properties of linear and nonlinear ion thermal waves in a pair ion plasma containing charged dust impurities

Abstract

Properties of linear and nonlinear ion thermal waves (ITWs) in pair ion plasmas containing a fraction of stationary charged (positive or negative) dust grains are investigated. For this purpose, a linear dispersion relation, a Korteweg-de Vries equation and (an energy integral of a classical potential) for linear (nonlinear) ITWs are derived from the ion continuity and momentum equations together with the Poisson equation. It is found that both the ITW frequency and the profile of the ion thermal solitary waves are significantly affected by the presence of positively/negatively charged dust grains. The present results should be useful in understanding the salient features of finite amplitude localized ion thermal solitary pulses in a pair ion plasma containing charged dust impurities.

  • Modulation instability of ion thermal waves (ITWs) is investigated in a plasma composed of positive and negative ions as well as a fraction of stationary charged (positive or negative) dust impurities. For this purpose, a linear dispersion relation and a nonlinear Schroedinger equation are derived. The latter admits localized envelope solitary wave solutions of bright (pulses) and dark (holes, voids) type. The envelope soliton depends on the intrinsic plasma parameters. It is found that modulation instability of ITWs is significantly affected by the presence of positively/negatively charged dust grains. The findings of this investigation should be useful in understanding themore » stable electrostatic wave packet acceleration mechanisms in pair-ion plasma, and also enhances our knowledge on the occurrence of instability associated to the existence of charged dust impurities in pair-ion plasmas. Our results should be of relevance for laboratory plasmas.« less
  • This article presents the first study of the head-on collision between two ion thermal waves in a two-fluid (i.e., a pair-ion) magnetized plasma consisting of positive and negative ions, as well as a fraction of stationary charged dust impurities, using the extended Poincare-Lighthill-Kuo method. The effects of the external magnetic field, the concentration of charged dust impurities, and the positive ion to negative ion temperature ratio on the solitary wave collisions are investigated. It is found that these factors significantly modify the phase shift.
  • In this paper the formation and the dynamics of ion thermal double layers (ITDLs) in a magnetized plasma, composed of positive and negative ions as well as a fraction of stationary charged (positive or negative) dust impurities have been studied. Using plasma hydrodynamics and Poisson equations for the two ion species, a modified Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation has been derived. The effects of the external magnetic field, the concentration of charged dust impurities, and the negative to positive ion temperature ratio on the ITDLs structure are investigated.
  • The behavior of linear and nonlinear dust ion acoustic (DIA) solitary waves in an unmagnetized quantum dusty plasma, including inertialess electrons and positrons, ions, and mobile negative dust grains, are studied. Reductive perturbation and Sagdeev pseudopotential methods are employed for small and large amplitude DIA solitary waves, respectively. A minimum value of the Mach number obtained for the existence of solitary waves using the analytical expression of the Sagdeev potential. It is observed that the variation on the values of the plasma parameters such as different values of Mach number M, ion to electron Fermi temperature ratio σ, and quantummore » diffraction parameter H can lead to the creation of compressive solitary waves.« less
  • Linear and nonlinear properties of low frequency ion acoustic wave (IAW) in pair-ion plasma in the presence of electrons are investigated. The dispersion relation and Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation for linear/nonlinear IAW are derived from sets of hydrodynamic equations where the ion pairs are inertial while electrons are Boltzmannian. The dispersion curves for various concentrations of electrons are discussed and compared with experimental results. The predicted linear IAW propagates at the same frequencies as those of the experimentally observed IAW if n{sub e0}{approx}10{sup 4} cm{sup -3}. It is found that nonlinear profile of the ion acoustic solitary waves is significantly affected bymore » the percentage ratio of electron number density and temperature. It is also determined that rarefactive solitary waves can propagate in this system. It is hoped that the results presented in this study would be helpful in understanding the salient features of the finite amplitude localized ion acoustic solitary pulses in a laboratory fullerene plasma.« less
