Title: Perspectives on hadronic physics with KLOE at DA{phi}NE

Abstract

The KLOE experiment is currently taking data at the electron-positron collider DA{phi}NE, the Frascati {phi}-factory. At the end of this run, we expect to have integrated 2.5 fb-1 of collisions at center of mass energy W {approx} M{phi}. Large samples of light pseudoscalar and scalar mesons are produced through {phi} radiative decays. A summary of the measurements in progress on the previously collected 450 pb-1 allows us to quote the expectations on the entire sample. KLOE has also proven the feasibility of precise measurement of the hadronic cross-section {sigma}(e+e- {yields} {pi}+{pi}-) in the region 0.33 < M{sub {pi}}{sub {pi}}{sup 2} < 1.02 GeV{sup 2}, extracting it by the measurement of the {pi}+{pi}-{gamma} cross section at small photon angles. Prospects for the entire sample and the feasibility to extend such a measurement down to threshold are presented.

  • The KLOE experiment has collected 2.5 fb{sup -1} of e{sup +}e{sup -} collisions at the {phi} peak and about 250 pb{sup -1} in the center of mass energy 1 GeV. Data taken on peak are used to study properties of light scalar and pseudoscalar mesons, produced through {phi} radiative decays. Off-peak data are used to perform preliminary analyses of the reactions e{sup +}e{sup -} {yields} e{sup +}e{sup -}{pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0} and e{sup +}e{sup -}{yields} e{sup +}e{sup -}{eta}. All these studies will be extended with the coming KLOE-2 run.
  • The status of the project for the upgrade of the Frascati {phi} factory, DA{phi}NE, and the proposal for the continuation of the KLOE physics program, are reviewed. In the field of {eta} ({eta}{sup '}) physics, the program includes precision measurements of all of the major branching ratios, the study of the kinematic distributions of hadronic and radiative decays, the measurement of single and double-conversion decays, the improvement of the sensitivity on searches for C and CP-violafing channels. Recent KLOE achievements in the field of hadronic physics are also presented.
  • The KLOE detector [1] is presently under construction at DA{phi}NE, the Frascati {phi}-factory, with the aim of studying CP violation in the K{sup 0}K{sup 0} system. At the design luminosity L=10{sup 33} cm{sup -2} s{sup -1} about 5x10{sup 10}{phi}-decays will be detected per year: this will be a unique possibility to study in detail the radiative {phi} decays into scalar mesons {phi}{yields}(f{sub 0},a{sub 0}){gamma}, thus helping in establishing the nature of these mesons which is still under debate.
  • The DEAR (DA{phi}NE Exotic Atom Research) experiment and the successor SIDDHARTA (Silicon Drift Detectors for Hadronic Atom Research by Timing Application) are using precision X-ray spectroscopy of kaonic hydrogen atoms to determine the strong interaction induced shift and width of the ground state. From the kaonic hydrogen and kaonic deuterium shifts and widths the isospin-dependent antikaon-nucleon scattering lengths can be determined, thus contributing to the understanding of chiral symmetry breaking in the strangeness sector.The experimental method of the DEAR experiment and the final results of the kaonic atom studies are presented, i.e. the first measurement of three X-ray transitions ofmore » kaonic nitrogen and the most precise measurement of the strong interaction caused shift and width in kaonic hydrogen obtained up to now.An outlook to the next steps of the experimental program will be given.« less
