Title: Induced curvature in brane worlds by surface terms in string effective actions with higher-curvature corrections

Abstract

In string-inspired effective actions, representing the low-energy bulk dynamics of brane/string theories, the higher-curvature ghost-free Gauss-Bonnet combination is obtained by local field redefinitions which leave the (perturbative) string amplitudes invariant. We show that such redefinitions lead to surface terms which induce curvature on the brane world boundary of the bulk spacetime.

  • Based on a four point function, the S-matrix elements at disk level of the scattering amplitude of one closed string Ramond-Ramond field (C) and two tachyons and one scalar field, we find out new couplings in brane anti brane effective actions for p = n, p+2 = n cases. Using the infinite corrections of the vertex of one RR, one gauge and one scalar field and applying the correct expansion, it is investigated in detail how we produce the infinite gauge poles of the amplitude for p = n case. By discovering new higher derivative corrections of two tachyon-two scalarmore » couplings in brane anti brane systems to all orders in α', we also obtain the infinite scalar poles in (t'+s'+u)-channel in field theory. Working with the complete form of the amplitude with the closed form of the expansion and comparing all the infinite contact terms of this amplitude, we derive several new Wess-Zumino couplings with all their infinite higher derivative corrections in the world volume of brane anti brane systems. In particular, in producing all the infinite scalar poles of < V{sub C}V{sub φ}V{sub T}V{sub T} > , one has to consider the fact that scalar's vertex operator in (-1)-picture must carry the internal σ{sub 3} Chan-Paton matrix. The symmetric trace effective action has a non-zero coupling between Dφ{sup (1)i} and Dφ{sup (2)}{sub i} while this coupling does not exist in ordinary trace effective action.« less
  • We find the D(-1)- and D1-brane instanton contributions to the hypermultiplet moduli space of type IIB string compactifications on Calabi-Yau threefolds. These combine with known perturbative and world sheet instanton corrections into a single modular invariant function that determines the hypermultiplet low-energy effective action.
  • A general canonical Hamiltonian approach for singular Lagrangians with arbitrary order of time derivatives on the fields is presented. The BRST generator and the effective action is constructed. The formalism is applied to the analysis of the rigid string. The complete algebra of first class constraints and the BRST generator are obtained. The effective action under different gauge conditions is discussed. 15 refs.
  • Dimensional reduction of ten-dimensional Yang-Mills supergravity containing up to four derivatives is described. Unexpected nondiagonal corrections to the four-dimensional gauge kinetic function and negative contributions to the scalar potential are found. We analyze the general structure of the resulting Lagrangian and discuss possible phenomenological consequences.
  • Using the thin-shell formalism we discuss the motion of domain walls in de Sitter and anti--de Sitter (AdS) time-dependent bulks. This motion results in a dynamics for the brane scale factor. We show that in the case of a clean brane the scale factor describes both singular and nonsingular universes, with phases of contraction and expansion. These phases can be understood as quotients of AdS spacetime by a discrete symmetry group. We discuss this effect in some detail, and suggest how the AdS/CFT correspondence could be applied to obtain a nonperturbative description of brane-world string cosmology.
