Title: Electroweak corrections and anomalous triple gauge-boson couplings in W{sup +}W{sup -} and W{sup {+-}}Z production at the CERN LHC

Abstract

We have analyzed the production of WZ and WW vector-boson pairs at the LHC. These processes give rise to four-fermion final states, and are particularly sensitive to possible nonstandard trilinear gauge-boson couplings. We have studied the interplay between the influence of these anomalous couplings and the effect of the complete logarithmic electroweak O({alpha}) corrections. Radiative corrections to the standard model processes in double-pole approximation and nonstandard terms due to trilinear couplings are implemented into a Monte Carlo program for pp{yields}4f(+{gamma}) with final states involving four or two charged leptons. We numerically investigate purely leptonic final states and find that electroweak corrections can fake new-physics signals, modifying the observables by the same amount and shape, in kinematical regions of statistical significance.

  • A sensitive way to test the anomalous HVV (V=W{sup {+-}},Z{sup 0}) couplings via pp{yields}W{sup +}W{sup +}jj{yields}l{sup +}{nu}l{sup +}{nu}jj at LHC was proposed by Zhang, Kuang, He, and Yuan [Phys. Rev. D 67, 114024 (2003)]. We studied the sensitivity to measure the anomalous gauge couplings of Higgs boson with optimized cuts. In this way, the sensitivity can be enhanced. Based on the optimized cuts and distribution of {delta}Pt(ll), the measurement of the couplings can be further improved with a binned maximum likelihood fit. It shows that, with an integrated luminosity of 300 fb{sup -1}, the anomalous HWW and HZZ couplings canmore » be measured at the level of 0.007-0.032 and 0.007-0.013 TeV{sup -1}, respectively, for the linearly realized effective Lagrangian.« less
  • The production of W boson pairs in proton-proton collisions at √s=8 TeV is studied using data corresponding to 20.3 fb -1 of integrated luminosity collected by the ATLAS detector during 2012 at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The W bosons are reconstructed using their leptonic decays into electrons or muons and neutrinos. Events with reconstructed jets are not included in the candidate event sample. A total of 6636 WW candidate events are observed. Measurements are performed in fiducial regions closely approximating the detector acceptance. The integrated measurement is corrected for all acceptance effects and for the W branching fractions tomore » leptons in order to obtain the total WW production cross section, which is found to be 71.1 ± 1.1(stat) -5.0+5.7(syst)±1.4(lumi) pb. This agrees with the next-to-next-to-leading-order Standard Model prediction of 63.2-1.4+1.6(scale)±1.2(PDF) pb. Fiducial differential cross sections are measured as a function of each of six kinematic variables. The distribution of the transverse momentum of the leading lepton is used to set limits on anomalous triple-gauge-boson couplings.« less

  • The potential of the International Linear electron-positron Collider (ILC) for seeking, in the annihilation production of W{sup {+-}}-boson pairs, signals induced by new neutral gauge bosons predicted by models belonging to various classes and featuring an extended gauge sector is studied. Limits that will be obtained at ILC for the parameters and masses of Z Prime bosons are compared with present-day and future data from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The possibility of discriminating between the effects of Z-Z Prime mixing and signals induced by anomalous gauge couplings (AGC) is demonstrated within theoretically motivated trilinear gauge models involving several freemore » anomalous parameters. It is found that the sensitivity of ILC to the effects of Z-Z Prime mixing in the process e{sup +}e{sup -} {yields} W{sup +}W{sup -} and its ability to discriminate between these two new-physics scenarios, Z Prime and AGC, become substantially higher upon employing polarized initial (e{sup +}e{sup -}) and final (W{sup {+-}}) states.« less
