Title: Francium sources at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro: Design and performance

Abstract

A facility for the production of radioactive francium is operating at the laboratories of the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN) in Legnaro, Italy. The goal is to collect a cold sample of radioactive atoms in a magneto-optical trap for studies in atomic, nuclear, and particle physics. Production of francium is achieved via the fusion-evaporation reaction {sup 197}Au({sup 18}O,kn){sup 215-k}Fr generated by a {approx}100-MeV {sup 18}O{sup 6+} beam on a thick gold target. The production target is heated to {approx}1200 K and kept at a potential of +3 kV to enhance Fr diffusion and surface desorption. Average production rates are 0.7x10{sup 6} ions/s for {sup 210}Fr with a primary beam flux of 10{sup 12} particles/s, with peaks of 2x10{sup 6} ions/s. Details are given on the design and construction of the production targets and on the measurements that characterize their performance.

  • The construction of the Radioactive Ion Beam (RIB) Facility SPES-DT, within the framework of the new European RIB panorama is under study at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. The present project will be devoted to the production of neutron rich exotic nuclei, by using the fission process induced by a 40 MeV proton beam, 200 {mu}A current, on a multi-sliced Uranium Carbide (UCx) target. The UCx multiple thin disks target, developed at LNL is designed so that the power released by the proton beam is mainly dissipated by irradiation. Following the idea of the existing HRIBF facility at Oak Ridgemore » National Laboratory (USA) where a proton primary beam of 40 MeV is also used, our target configuration is an evolution which permits to sustain a higher power on target. A high number of fission products (up to 10{sup 13} fission/s) will be obtained, still keeping a low power density deposition inside the target. The whole facility, together with the details on the Direct Target configuration, will be described. Thermo-mechanical calculations, pellets preparation and characterization, effusion-diffusion model predictions for the estimation of the release fraction of different radioactive nuclides will be discussed. A scaled (1:5) prototype of the Target system has been built and tested recently at HRIBF.« less
  • The AGATA Demonstrator Array is presently under installation at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, Italy, where it will replace the CLARA array at the target position of the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer. In the present contribution, the details of the installation will be reviewed. Preliminary results from the first in-beam commissioning test will be given.
  • The Selective Production of Exotic Species (SPES) project is an ISOL facility under construction at Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare–Laboratori Nationali di Legnaro (INFN-LNL). 1+ radioactive ions, produced and extracted from the target-ion-source system, will be charge bred to high charge states by an ECR charge breeder (SPES-CB): the project will adopt an upgraded version of the PHOENIX charge breeder, developed since about twenty years by the Laboratoire de Physique Subatomique et de Cosmologie (LPSC). The collaboration between LNL and LPSC started in 2010 with charge breeding experiments performed on the LPSC test bench and led, in June 2014, tomore » the signature of a Research Collaboration Agreement for the delivery of a complete charge breeder and ancillaries, satisfying the SPES requirements. Important technological aspects were tackled during the construction phase, as, for example, beam purity issues, electrodes alignment, and vacuum sealing. This phase was completed in spring 2015, after which the qualification tests were carried out at LPSC on the 1+/q+ test stand. This paper describes the characteristics of the SPES-CB, with particular emphasis on the results obtained during the qualification tests: charge breeding of Ar, Xe, Rb, and Cs satisfied the SPES requirements for different intensities of the injected 1+ beam, showing very good performances, some of which are “best ever” for this device.« less
  • In the last years, at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati the X-ray optics group has developed a series of prototypes based on polycapillary optics that allow to perform a full X spectroscopy analysis. This paper presents preliminary results for three different prototypes: the first allows transmission X-imaging with a resolution less than 6 {mu}m; the second one allows 2D elemental mapping with a resolution less than 100x100x{mu}m{sup 2}.The identification of ice core insoluble mineral aerosol source areas is an important tool for the understanding of present day and past pathways of atmospheric transport toward the poles and the paleoclimatic information.more » To achieve this result it is very helpful to determine the geochemical composition of atmospheric dust particles deposited over the ice sheets and archived in ice core samples and to compare it with the composition of potential source areas sediments. The main experimental challenge is the very low concentration of mineral materials trapped in the snow, especially for Antarctic firn and ice samples, typically around 10-20 ppb (approx5000 particles/cm{sup 3}). A complete studies of elemental concentrations in the ppb range (such as insoluble dust in deep ice core) require ultimate cleaning procedures to collect, prepare and perform nondestructive experiments, that require a very bright X-ray sources, such as synchrotron radiation, combined with a total external reflection regime. Based on a polycapillary semi-lens, here is reported preliminary results of a complete portable prototype that allows to obtain elemental measurements in total external reflection regime. At Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati is currently under development and design of a single prototype that allows users to make all the techniques of fluorescence spectroscopy and X-imaging.« less
