Title: Spontaneous current generation in the 2SC phase

Abstract

It is found that, except chromomagnetic instability, the gapless 2SC phase also exhibits a paramagnetic response to the perturbation of an external color neutral baryon current. The spontaneously generated baryon current driven by the mismatch is equivalent to the one-plane wave Larkin-Ovchinnikov-Fudde-Ferrell (LOFF) state. We describe the 2SC phase in the nonlinear realization framework, and show that each instability indicates the spontaneous generation of the corresponding pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone current. We show this Nambu-Goldstone currents generation state covers the gluon phase as well as the one-plane wave LOFF state. We further point out that, when the charge neutrality condition is required, there exists a narrow unstable LOFF (Us-LOFF) window, where not only off-diagonal gluons but the diagonal 8th gluon cannot avoid the magnetic instability. We discuss that the diagonal magnetic instability in this Us-LOFF window cannot be cured by an off-diagonal gluon condensate in the color superconducting phase, and it will also show up in some constrained Abelian asymmetric superfluid/superconducting systems.

  • We find that for a large enough strange quark mass, m{sub s}{sup 2}/4{mu}{delta}>2/3(1-0.023) ({mu} is the quark number chemical potential, {delta} is the superconducting gap), the kaon condensed color flavor locked (CFL) phase of asymptotically dense strongly interacting 3 flavor quark matter is unstable with respect to spontaneous generation of currents of Nambu Goldstone bosons due to spontaneous breaking of baryon number symmetry and hypercharge symmetry in the CFLK{sup 0} ground state. The total baryon and hypercharge currents vanish in the ground state. We find that CFLK{sup 0} and the new state are separated by a first order phase transition.more » The result is derived in the mean field approximation of high density effective theory with electromagnetic interactions turned off.« less
  • It is shown that in a simple cosmic-string-forming extension of the standard electroweak theory and for some particular values of the underlying parameters, electric currents can be spontaneously generated in cosmic strings, without the need of any external field (e.g., electric or magnetic) as is required in most models. This mechanism is then shown to break spontaneously the Lorentz invariance along the initially Goto-Nambu string. The characteristic time needed for the current to build up is estimated and found to lowest order to depend only on the mass of the intermediate [ital W] vector boson and the fine structure constant.
  • We study a resistively shunted semiconductor superlattice subject to a high-frequency electric field. Using a balance equation approach that incorporates the influence of the electric circuit, we determine numerically a range of amplitude and frequency of the ac field for which a dc bias and current are generated {ital spontaneously} and show that this region is likely accessible to current experiments. Our simulations reveal that the Bloch frequency corresponding to the spontaneous dc bias is approximately an integer multiple of the ac field frequency. {copyright} {ital 1998} {ital The American Physical Society}
