Title: Evidence for B{sub s}{sup (*)}B{sub s}{sup (*)} Production at the {upsilon}(5S) Resonance

Abstract

We use data collected by the CLEO III detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring to measure the inclusive yields of D{sub s} mesons as B({upsilon}(5S){yields}D{sub s}X)=(44.7{+-}4.2{+-}9.9)% and B({upsilon}(4S){yields}D{sub s}X)=(18.1{+-}0.5{+-}2.8)%. From these measurements, we make a model dependent estimate of the ratio of B{sub s}{sup (*)}B{sub s}{sup (*)} to the total bb quark pair production of (16.0{+-}2.6{+-}5.8)% at the {upsilon}(5S) energy.

  • The inclusive production of D{sub s}, D{sup 0}, and J/{psi} mesons is studied using a 1.86 fb{sup -1} data sample collected on the {upsilon}(5S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e{sup +}e{sup -} collider. The number of bb events in this {upsilon}(5S) data sample is determined. We measure the branching fractions B({upsilon}(5S){yields}D{sub s}X)/2=(23.6{+-}1.2{+-}3.6)%, B({upsilon}(5S){yields}D{sup 0}X)/2=(53.8{+-}2.0{+-}3.4)%, and B({upsilon}(5S){yields}J/{psi}X)/2=(1.030{+-}0.080{+-}0.067)%. From the D{sub s} and D{sup 0} inclusive branching fractions the ratio f{sub s}=(18.0{+-}1.3{+-}3.2)% of B{sub s}{sup (*)}B{sub s}{sup (*)} to the total bb quark pair production at the {upsilon}(5S) energy is obtained in a model-dependent way.
  • Using the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have observed the B{sub s} meson in e{sup +}e{sup -} annihilation at the {upsilon}(5S) resonance. We find 14 candidates consistent with B{sub s} decays into final states with a J/{psi} or a D{sub s}{sup (*)-}. The probability that we have observed a background fluctuation is less than 8x10{sup -10}. We have established that at the energy of the {upsilon}(5S) resonance B{sub s} production proceeds predominantly through the creation of B{sub s}*B{sub s}* pairs. We find {sigma}(e{sup +}e{sup -}{yields}B{sub s}*B{sub s}*)=[0.11{sub -0.03}{sup +0.04}(stat){+-}0.02(syst)] nb, and set the following limits: {sigma}(e{supmore » +}e{sup -}{yields}B{sub s}B{sub s})/{sigma}(e{sup +}e{sup -}{yields}B{sub s}*B{sub s}*)<0.16 and [{sigma}(e{sup +}e{sup -}{yields}B{sub s}B{sub s}*)+{sigma}(e{sup +}e{sup -}{yields}B{sub s}*B{sub s})]/{sigma}(e{sup +}e{sup -}{yields}B{sub s}*= B{sub s}*)<0.16 (90% C.L.). The mass of the B{sub s}* meson is measured to be M{sub B{sub s}}{sub *}=[5.414{+-}0.001(stat){+-}0.003(syst)] GeV/c{sup 2}.« less
  • We have searched for B{sub s}{sup 0{yields}}hh decays, where h stands for a charged or neutral kaon, or a charged pion. These results are based on a 23.6 fb{sup -1} data sample collected with the Belle detector on the {Upsilon}(5S) resonance at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e{sup +}e{sup -} collider, containing 1.25x10{sup 6} B{sub s}{sup (*)}B{sub s}{sup (*)} events. We observe the decay B{sub s}{sup 0{yields}}K{sup +}K{sup -} and measure its branching fraction, B(B{sub s}{sup 0{yields}}K{sup +}K{sup -})=[3.8{sub -0.9}{sup +1.0}(stat){+-}0.5(syst){+-}0.5(f{sub s})]x10{sup -5}. The first error is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third error is due to the uncertainty inmore » the B{sub s}{sup 0} production fraction in e{sup +}e{sup -{yields}}bb events. No significant signals are seen in other decay modes, and we set upper limits at the 90% confidence level: B(B{sub s}{sup 0{yields}}K{sup -{pi}+})<1.2x10{sup -5}, B(B{sub s}{sup 0{yields}{pi}+{pi}-})<2.6x10{sup -5}, and B(B{sub s}{sup 0{yields}}K{sup 0}K{sup 0})<6.6x10{sup -5}.« less
  • We describe a method that provides a model independent measurement of the B{sub S} fraction in {upsilon}(5S) resonance decays, f{sub S}, using the relative rates of like-sign versus opposite-sign dileptons; the like-sign leptons result from B{sup 0} and B{sub S} mixing. In addition, we show that determining the rates of single, double and triple D{sub S}{sup {+-}} mesons provides an alternative way of finding f{sub S}.
  • Knowledge of the B{sub s} decay fraction of the {upsilon}(5S) resonance, f{sub S}, is important for B{sub s} meson studies at the {upsilon}(5S) energy. Using a data sample collected by the CLEO III detector at CESR consisting of 0.423 fb{sup -1} on the {upsilon}(5S) resonance, 6.34 fb{sup -1} on the {upsilon}(4S) and 2.32 fb{sup -1} in the continuum below the {upsilon}(4S), we measure B({upsilon}(5S){yields}{phi}X)=(13.8{+-}0.7{sub -1.5}{sup +2.3})% and B({upsilon}(4S){yields}{phi}X)=(7.1{+-}0.1{+-}0.6)%; the ratio of the two rates is (1.9{+-}0.1{sub -0.2}{sup +0.3}). This is the first measurement of the {phi} meson yield from the {upsilon}(5S). Using these rates, and a model dependent estimate ofmore » B(B{sub s}{yields}{phi}X), we determine f{sub S}=(24.6{+-}2.9{sub -5.3}{sup +11.0})%. We also update our previous independent measurement of f{sub S} made using the inclusive D{sub s} yields to now be (16.8{+-}2.6{sub -3.4}{sup +6.7})%, due to a better estimate of the number of hadronic events. We also report the total {upsilon}(5S) hadronic cross section above continuum to be {sigma}(e{sup +}e{sup -}{yields}{upsilon}(5S))=(0.301{+-}0.002{+-}0.039) nb. This allows us to extract the fraction of B mesons as (58.9{+-}10.0{+-}9.2)%, equal to 1-f{sub S}. Averaging the three methods gives a model dependent result of f{sub S}=(21{sub -3}{sup +6})%.« less
