Title: A Heterotic Standard Model

Abstract

Within the context of the E8 x E8 heterotic superstring compactified on a smooth Calabi-Yau threefold with an SU(4) gauge instanton, we show the existence of simple, realistic N = 1 supersymmetric vacua that are compatible with low energy particle physics. The observable sector of these vacua has gauge group SU(3)C x SU(2)L x U(1)Y x U(1)B-L, three families of quarks and leptons, each with an additional right-handed neutrino, two Higgs-Higgs conjugate pairs, a small number of uncharged moduli and no exotic matter.

  • We present a Z{sub 6} orbifold compactification of the E{sub 8}xE{sub 8} heterotic string which leads to the (supersymmetric) standard model gauge group and matter content. The quarks and leptons appear as three 16-plets of SO(10), whereas the Higgs fields do not form complete SO(10) multiplets. The model has large vacuum degeneracy. For generic vacua, no exotic states appear at low energies and the model is consistent with gauge coupling unification. The top quark Yukawa coupling arises from gauge interactions and is of the order of the gauge couplings, whereas the other Yukawa couplings are suppressed.

  • This paper shows that for the heterotic string theory in the presence of arbitrary background gauge, gravitational and antisymmetric tensor fields, truncated by a general coordinate dependent compactification a la Scherk-Schwarz, the requirement of 2D conformal invariance is as restrictive as to inhibit supersymmetry breaking with vanishing cosmological constant.
  • The authors study the consequences of requiring twisted boundary conditions on d coordinates of the 26-D bosonic string. In the context of a heterotic model when d=16 the authors are led to the tachgyon-and anomaly-free 0(16) circle times 0(16) model which has been recently discussed in the literature.
  • In this paper the covariant (in the {sigma}-model sense) background field method for calculating the anomalies of the heterotic string propagating on the background of its massless modes is developed in a curved superspace of the two-dimensional (1,0) supergravity. As the massless background fields, the authors use metric, an antisymmetric tensor, a dilaton and gauge bosons. Explicit calculation of the anomalies up to five loops is performed and the results are found to be in agreement with the known facts about the heterotic string low-energy effective action. The dilaton-dependent corrections to the anomalies at the two- and three-loop levels aremore » shown to be absent.« less
