Title: Search for Rare and Forbidden Decays D{sup +}{yields}h{sup {+-}}e{sup {+-}}e{sup +}

Abstract

Using 0.8x10{sup 6} D{sup +}D{sup -} pairs collected with the CLEO-c detector at the {psi}(3770) resonance, we have searched for flavor-changing neutral current and lepton-number-violating decays of D{sup +} mesons to final states with dielectrons. We find no indication of either, obtaining 90% confidence level upper limits of B(D{sup +}{yields}{pi}{sup +}e{sup +}e{sup -})<7.4x10{sup -6}, B(D{sup +}{yields}{pi}{sup -}e{sup +}e{sup +})<3.6x10{sup -6}, B(D{sup +}{yields}K{sup +}e{sup +}e{sup -})<6.2x10{sup -6}, and B(D{sup +}{yields}K{sup -}e{sup +}e{sup +})<4.5x10{sup -6}.

  • We have searched for flavor-changing neutral current decays and lepton-number-violating decays of D{sup +} and D{sub s}{sup +} mesons to final states of the form h{sup {+-}}e{sup {-+}}e{sup +}, where h is either {pi} or K. We use the complete samples of CLEO-c open-charm data, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 818 pb{sup -1} at the center-of-mass energy E{sub CM}=3.774 GeV containing 2.4x10{sup 6} D{sup +}D{sup -} pairs and 602 pb{sup -1} at E{sub CM}=4.170 GeV containing 0.6x10{sup 6} D{sub s}{sup *{+-}}D{sub s}{sup {-+}} pairs. No signal is observed in any channel, and we obtain 90% confidence level upper limits onmore » branching fractions B(D{sup +}{yields}{pi}{sup +}e{sup +}e{sup -})<5.9x10{sup -6}, B(D{sup +}{yields}{pi}{sup -}e{sup +}e{sup +})<1.1x10{sup -6}, B(D{sup +}{yields}K{sup +}e{sup +}e{sup -})<3.0x10{sup -6}, B(D{sup +}{yields}K{sup -}e{sup +}e{sup +})<3.5x10{sup -6}, B(D{sub s}{sup +}{yields}{pi}{sup +}e{sup +}e{sup -})<2.2x10{sup -5}, B(D{sub s}{sup +}{yields}{pi}{sup -}e{sup +}e{sup +})<1.8x10{sup -5}, B(D{sub s}{sup +}{yields}K{sup +}e{sup +}e{sup -})<5.2x10{sup -5}, and B(D{sub s}{sup +}{yields}K{sup -}e{sup +}e{sup +})<1.7x10{sup -5}.« less
  • A new upper limit is presented for the branching ratio (BR) of {eta}{yields}3{gamma}. This decay is not allowed by charge-conjugation invariance. We have determined that BR({eta}{yields}3{gamma})<4x10{sup -5}. We also obtained BR({eta}{yields}{pi}{sup 0}{gamma}{yields}3{gamma})<9x10{sup -5}; this decay mode is absolutely forbidden, as it violates conservation of angular momentum. Finally, we have established that BR({eta}{yields}{pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0}{gamma}{gamma})<1.2x10{sup -3} in a restricted diphoton-energy region. All three upper limits are at the 90% confidence level. They were obtained by using the Crystal Ball multiphoton spectrometer at the AGS and are based on the analysis of 28 million {eta} mesons produced in the {pi}{sup -}p{yields}{eta}n reactionmore » close to threshold.« less
  • By using 1.8x10{sup 6} DD pairs, we have measured B(D{sup 0}{yields}{pi}{sup -}e{sup +}{nu}{sub e})=0.299(11)(9)%, B(D{sup +}{yields}{pi}{sup 0}e{sup +}{nu}{sub e})=0.373(22)(13)%, B(D{sup 0}{yields}K{sup -}e{sup +}{nu}{sub e})=3.56(3)(9)%, and B(D{sup +}{yields}K{sup 0}e{sup +}{nu}{sub e})=8.53(13)(23)% and have studied the q{sup 2} dependence of the form factors. By combining our results with recent lattice calculations, we obtain |V{sub cd}|=0.217(9)(4)(23) and |V{sub cs}|=1.015(10)(11)(106)
  • Using a sample of 1.8 million DD mesons collected at the {psi}(3770) with the CLEO-c detector, we study the semileptonic decays D{sup 0}{yields}{pi}{sup -}e{sup +}{nu}{sub e}, D{sup +}{yields}{pi}{sup 0}e{sup +}{nu}{sub e}, D{sup 0}{yields}K{sup -}e{sup +}{nu}{sub e}, and D{sup +}{yields}K{sup 0}e{sup +}{nu}{sub e}. For the total branching fractions we find B(D{sup 0}{yields}{pi}{sup -}e{sup +}{nu}{sub e})=0.299(11)(9)%, B(D{sup +}{yields}{pi}{sup 0}e{sup +}{nu}{sub e})=0.373(22)(13)%, B(D{sup 0}{yields}K{sup -}e{sup +}{nu}{sub e})=3.56(3)(9)%, and B(D{sup +}{yields}K{sup 0}e{sup +}{nu}{sub e})=8.53(13)(23)%, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. In addition, form factors are studied through fits to the partial branching fractions obtained in five q{sup 2} ranges. Bymore » combining our results with recent unquenched lattice calculations, we obtain |V{sub cd}|=0.217(9)(4)(23) and |V{sub cs}|=1.015(10)(11)(106), where the final error is theoretical.« less
  • Using {psi}(3770){yields}DD events collected with the CLEO-c detector at the Cornell e{sup +}e{sup -} storage ring, tagged by fully reconstructing one D meson in a hadronic decay mode, we measure absolute branching fractions and differential decay rates for D{sup 0}{yields}{pi}{sup -}e{sup +}{nu}{sub e}, D{sup +}{yields}{pi}{sup 0}e{sup +}{nu}{sub e}, D{sup 0}{yields}K{sup -}e{sup +}{nu}{sub e}, and D{sup +}{yields}K{sup 0}e{sup +}{nu}{sub e}. The measured decay rates are used to study semileptonic form factors governing these transitions and to test unquenched Lattice QCD (LQCD) calculations. We average our results with previously published CLEO-c measurements of the same quantities using a neutrino reconstruction technique. Combiningmore » LQCD calculations of form factor absolute normalizations f{sub +}(0) and measurements of f{sub +}{sup {pi}}(0)|V{sub cd}| and f{sub +}{sup K}(0)|V{sub cs}|, we find |V{sub cd}|=0.222(8)(3)(23) and |V{sub cs}|=1.018(10)(8)(106), where the uncertainties are statistical, experimental systematic, and from LQCD, respectively.« less
