A method to prepare molecules in nonequilibrium nuclear configurations is proposed. By using strong laser fields it is possible to stabilize the dissociative continuum of an electronic potential. Depending on the parameters of the laser the dissociative potential can be shaped to continuously change the equilibrium position over a broad range of values. In order to transfer the molecular wave packet from the ground electronic state to the stabilized dissociative potential, a novel adiabatic passage method is exploited that uses nonresonant time-delayed chirped pulses, so that the wave packet is moved to the desired place without distortion. The principles of the method are tested numerically in a diatomic molecule modeled by three analytic potential curves.
