Implications of weld metal mismatch on defect assessment procedures to BS PD6493:1991
- TWI, Abington (United Kingdom). Structural Integrity Dept.
The effect of yield strength mismatch on the behavior of semi-elliptical surface cracks, with a/t = 0.25 and a/c = 0.25, located in weld metal has been investigated by experiment and three-dimensional finite element analysis. Finite element analysis predictions of load versus displacement and load versus CMOD agreed with experimental tension test results on welds with 9% yield strength overmatching and 20% undermatching. Predictions of CTOD and J for approximately {+-}20% yield strength mismatch indicated that the Level 2 defect assessment procedure in BSI PD6493:1991 is safe for matched and undermatched welds, but potentially unsafe for overmatched welds. Recommendations for obtaining safe assessments are made.
