Title: Optical switching: Shakeup in electronics

Abstract

Optical transistors are under development at the US Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory and will some day replace electronic transistors for faster switching. These all-optical transistors will be at least 100 times faster than today's electronic transistors. The prices of these all-optical devices is predicted to be well below $100 if mass produced using micro-electronics fabrication methods. (AIP) (c)
