Title: Small-scale wind power in southern Patagonia

Abstract

Southern Patagonia has a moderate to low solar radiation resource, but an excellent wind resource, particularly in the regions of Santa Cruz and Chubut in Argentina and Magallanes in Chile. There are also a significant number of isolated communities whose energy requirements are only partially satisfied, which can benefit from renewable energy sources such as wind power and photovoltaic (PV) systems. Technological advances in recent years have made these systems more reliable and less costly. Today's improved technology also makes it possible to feed not only DC loads, but also conventional AC loads through the use of inverters, often deploying existing diesel generators as backup power.
