Reactivity of Rh{sup +}(CO){sub 2} during the NO-CO and CO-O{sub 2} reactions over Rh/Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}

Exposure of Rh{sup +}(CO){sub 2} on Rh/Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} to NO causes CO desorption and adsorption of NO as Rh-NO{sup +}; exposure of Rh{sup +}(CO){sub 2} to NO/H{sub 2} produced N{sub 2}O at 573 K. The presence of both reductant (i.e., CO) and oxidant (i.e., NO or O{sub 2}) in the reactant pulse is needed to initiate and sustain the NO-CO redox reaction cycle for CO{sub 2} formation.
