The transvenous digital subtraction coronary angiography project at the National Synchrotron Light Source has obtained research quality images of human coronary arteries. The technique uses monochromatic x-ray beams above and below the iodine K-absorption edge to enhance the sensitivity to the contrast agent allowing a venous injection. The advantages and some of the limitations afforded by the imaging technique will be discussed. Recent upgrades to the facility will allow some of the limitations to be overcome. New initiatives with industrial partners may allow the technique, which to present has been limited to synchrotron based sources, to make use of compact accelerator based sources.
