Long-term storage of ion-exchange resins can present a utility with some unique management issues. Maintaining waste form integrity to minimize reprocessing to meet final waste form requirements is important from both an ALARA and a cost perspective. Storage of resins underwater in large tanks has been used at foreign nuclear plants for more than 20 years. On the basis of that experience, this report on interim storage designs offers another choice for storage of spent ion-exchange resins.
