Title: Update on the distribution automation pilot project at B.C. Hydro

Conference ·
OSTI ID:192245

The development of B.C. Hydro`s Window 2000 Distribution Automation Pilot Project at George Tripp Substation near Victoria, B.C., commenced in 1993. The first Stages of development included pilot project definition, customization of the application software for volt/var control, development of the strategy for load control, development of the databases, and development of the data architecture. Following the completion of these steps, the databases were completed, and the detailed models of the feeders were fine tuned. Four specific study models were created for a typical winter working day, winter weekend day, summer working day, and summer weekend day. These models were used for the following purposes: (1) To select the power equipment, and determine optimal locations which will maximize the benefits from the coordinated Distribution Automation (DA) functions planned for this pilot project (2) To ensure the measurability of the benefits from the DA functions (3) To specify the power equipment controllers, the telecommunications system, the execution algorithm, and the dispatchers interface to the system. In order to satisfy the expected performance of the automated functions. Some of the results of these detailed studies are described in the following sections, together with a description of the equipment which will be used.
