EPRI: Information highway may put utilities` competitors in passing lane
According to a much anticipated study by the Electric Power REsearch Institute (EPRI) on the business opportunities and risks for utilities on the information superhighway, utilities face the threat of companies raiding their customer bases. These threats will become particularly acute if retail wheeling becomes broadly accepted in the future - customers will be able to buy power from the low-cost provider, and third-party energy information service (EIS) providers will be in a position to sell power directly to their customers either as IPPs or as brokers, thus eroding the utilities` retail customer base. To deal with these threats, utilities have little choice but to prepare actively to deploy both supply-side information systems and EIS and to become more marketing-driven in their business strategies.
