Many detectors - including solid-state particle detectors, microchannel plates, and photodiodes - output small current signals that require amplification and conversion to a voltage. Transimpedance amplifiers (TIA) are widely utilized in experimental and commercial applications for this task. Numerous detection systems require wide bandwidth, ultra-low noise, high gain, and linear amplification. Yet, TIAs having this combination of features are surprisingly not readily available and many consumers resort to costly and time consuming in-house development. We have begun the development of ultra-low noise, wide bandwidth, and high gain transimpedance amplifiers for linear amplification of current signals on the order of 1 nA. They will fill a void in commercially available transimpedance amplifiers having state-of-the-art characteristics that are suitable for scientific R&D applications, and be realized via an Advanced-TIA Platform and a Plug-and-Play Advanced-TIA Unit. Our principal technical objectives are to produce a TIA having a signal bandwidth ≥ 1 MHz (-3dB), gain ≥ 107 V/A, and equivalent input-noise ~ 1.5 nA (rms) that achieves linear amplification of current ≥ 1 nA. Building a TIA with just two of these three characteristics is rather straightforward; commercial products are available. Creating a transimpedance amplifier having this quartet of characteristics is much more challenging. It requires expertly designing and finely tuning a circuit to within the technological limits of present-day electronic devices.
