The Spin Muon Collaboration at CERN probes the internal spin structure of the nucleon in inclusive muon-nucleon scattering. Here, the result of the 1993 proton run will be presented. At the average four momentum transfer of {ital Q}{sup 2}=10 GeV{sup 2} the first moment of the polarized spin structure function {ital g}{sub 1}{sup p} is found to be {Gamma}{sub 1}{sup p}={integral}{sup 1}{sub 0}{ital g}{sub 1}{sup p}({ital x})=0.136{plus_minus}0.011(stat.){plus_minus}0.011(sys.). From this, the quark spin contribution to the proton spin {Sigma}=0.22{plus_minus}0.10(stat.){plus_minus}0.10(sys.) is extracted. Combining all available data, the Bjorken sum rule is confirmed within 10%. {copyright} {ital 1995} {ital American} {ital Institute} {ital of} {ital Physics}.
