What is a FTWC? Flanged Tritium Waste Containers (FTWC) are designed to hold tritium contaminated waste. The tritium contaminated waste is in secondary containers such as plastic bags and paint cans. Tritium is a gas that is lighter than air. Hydrogen gas is lighter-than-air. Hydrogen gas forms explosive mixtures with air from 4% concentration to 75% concentration. Tritium gas has a Biological ½ life = 10 – 12 days. It is a beta particle emitter. Exposure can occur by inhalation or by skin adsorption.
