New compounds in the MoO{sub 3}-V{sub 2}O{sub 5} system
- Institute of Catalysis, Novosibirsk (Russian Federation); and others
Vanadium molybdenum compounds are widely used as catalysts for selective oxidation of acrolein to acrylic acid, methanol to formaldehyde, benzene to maleic anhydride, etc. The following phases are known to exist in the MoO{sub 3}-V{sub 2}O{sub 5} system: V{sub 2}O{sub 5}, (V{sub 1-x}Mo{sub x}){sub 2}O{sub 5} (x < 0.3), V{sub 2}MoO{sub 8}, and MoO{sub 3}. Molybdenum trioxide dissolves up to 2 mol % V{sub 2}O{sub 5} or up to 3 mol % V{sub 2}O{sub 4}. Vanadium dissolution in {open_quotes}hexagonal{close_quotes} molybdenum trioxide was studied. However, the necessary condition for the existence of hexagonal MoO{sub 3} is the presence of low-valent cations (those of alkali metals or ammonium). In this work, the authors used mechanochemical synthesis to prepare a number of earlier known compounds in the title system as well as some new compounds, which have not been reported thus far.
