Title: Improving Transient Stability of Interconnected Power Systems Through HVDE Controls

Abstract

AC-DC corridors have been extensively used for bulk power transmission. In many of the cases, the power transfer through the parallel A C lines is restricted due to stability limits. Fast active power modulations of the HVDC link could enhance transient stability of interconnected power systems. This could be achieved by effectively utilizing the available headroom of the HVDC link, especially the transient overloading capability of classic HVDC link. In this paper, control schemes for HVDC power modulations are discussed. The effectiveness of HVDC link power modulations is demonstrated through the improved transient stability of the Pacific A C and DC Interties of North America under critical disturbances. System studies are performed using the detailed dynamic model of the Western Interconnection system.
