As the adoption of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) continues to grow, so does the development of a network of fast-charging stations to support long-distance travel and provide alternatives to residential and workplace charging. Fast charging, however, could be significantly more expensive than residential/workplace charging, mainly due to high power consumption and low utilization. This poster highlights NREL's review of the current cost of electricity for PEV fast charging in the United States as well as its evaluation of alternative charting options to mitigate electricity costs for public fast-charging stations via on-site electricity generation (from photovoltaics) and storage.
