Based on first-principles calculations, we show that chemically active metal ns ² lone pairs play an important role in exciton relaxation and dissociation in low-dimensional halide perovskites. Here, we studied excited-state properties of several recently discovered luminescent all-inorganic and hybrid organic-inorganic zero-dimensional (0D) Sn and Pb halides. The results show that, despite the similarity in ground-state electronic structure between Sn and Pb halide perovskites, the chemically more active Sn ²⁺ lone pair leads to stronger excited-state structural distortion and larger Stokes shift in Sn halides. Large polarons in lead halide perovskites

Lead halide perovskites show marked defect tolerance responsible for their excellent optoelectronic properties. These properties might be explained by the formation of large polarons, but how they are formed and whether organic cations are essential remain open questions. We provide a direct time domain view of large polaron formation in single-crystal lead bromide perovskites CH ₃NH ₃PbBr ₃ and CsPbBr ₃. We found that large polaron forms predominantly from the deformation of the PbBr ₃ ^- frameworks, irrespective of the cation type. Cs _1–x Rb _x PbCl ₃ and Cs _1–x Rb _x PbBr ₃ Solid Solutions: Understanding Octahedral Tilting in Lead Halide Perovskites

The structures of the lead halide perovskites CsPbCl3 and CsPbBr3 have been determined from X-ray powder diffraction data to be orthorhombic with Pnma space group symmetry. Their structures are distorted from the cubic structure of their hybrid analogs, CH3NH3PbX3 (X = Cl, Br), by tilts of the octahedra (Glazer tilt system a–b+a–). Substitution of the smaller Rb+ for Cs+ increases the octahedral tilting distortion and eventually destabilizes the perovskite structure altogether. Two-dimensional (2D) halide perovskites exhibit excellent potential for optoelectronics because of their outstanding physical properties and structural diversity. We investigate the possibility of enhancing chemical order in the relaxor ferroelectric Na{sub 1/2}Bi{sub 1/2}TiO{sub 3} upon substitution of Na{sup +} by other monovalent cations M{sup +} using total energy calculations based on density functional theory.
