Pairing theory of the symmetry energy

A model is investigated that displays a picture of the symmetry energy as an energy of rotation in isospace of a Cooper pair condensate, briefly 'superfluid isorotation'. The Hamiltonian is isobarically invariant and has a one- and a two-nucleon term, where the two-nucleon interaction is composed of an isovector pairing force and an interaction of isospins. It is analyzed in the Hartree-Bogolyubov plus random-phase approximation (RPA). The Hartree-Bogolyubov energy minus Lagrangian multiplier terms proportional to the number of valence nucleons and the z component of the isospin is shown to be locally minimized by a product of neutron and protonmore »« less

Nuclear pairing: Global trends and local fluctuations

We calculate nuclear pairing gaps for ground-state configurations for 8979 nuclei from {sup 16}O to A = 339 in the Lipkin-Nogami pairing model. The energy levels required for the calculation are obtained from the folded-Yukawa single-particular model for ground-state shapes obtained in the macroscopic-microscopic approach by minimizing the total potential energy with respect to {epsilon}{sub 2},{epsilon}{sub 4}, {epsilon}{sub 3} and {epsilon}{sub 6} shape degrees of freedom. We study the behavior of the calculated pairing gap {Delta} and the number-fluctuation constant {lambda}2 on neutron number N and proton number Z. Neutron spectra from the /sup 51/V(p, n)/sup 51/Cr reaction have been measure d at bombarding energies of 18, 20, 22, 24, and 26 MeV. The portion of the spectra corresponding to residual excitations of 10 MeV or less was compared to a shape calculated under the assumption that the residual levels are two exciton proton-particle neutron-hole states. Good agreement was obtained at 22, 24, and 26 MeV, but the spectra at lower bombarding energy could only be fitted with the addition of contributions from four exciton states. Collective inertia is strongly influenced at the level crossing at which the quantum system changes its microscopic configuration diabatically. Pairing correlations tend to make the large-amplitude nuclear collective motion more adiabatic by reducing the effect of these configuration changes. Competition between pairing and level crossing is thus expected to have a profound impact on spontaneous fission lifetimes. To elucidate the role of nucleonic pairing on spontaneous fission, we study the dynamic fission trajectories of ²⁶⁴Fm and ²⁴⁰Pu using the state-of-the-art self-consistent framework.
