In this paper, we discuss a spin-transfer torque device, where the role of the soft ferromagnetic layer is played by a magnetic particle or a magnetic molecule, in weak tunnel contact with two spin polarized leads. We investigate if the magnetization of the particle can be manipulated electronically, in the regime where the critical current for magnetization switching is negligibly weak, which could be due to the reduced particle dimensions. Strongly Enhanced Gilbert Damping in 3 d Transition-Metal Ferromagnet Monolayers in Contact with the Topological Insulator ${Bi}_{2} {Se}_{3}$

Engineering Gilbert damping of ferromagnetic metal films is of great importance to exploit and design spintronic devices that are operated with an ultrahigh speed. Based on the scattering theory of Gilbert damping, we extend the torque method originally used in studies of magnetocrystalline anisotropy to theoretically determine Gilbert dampings of ferromagnetic metals. This method is utilized to investigate Gilbert dampings of 3d transition-metal ferromagnet iron, cobalt, and nickel monolayers that are contacted by the prototypical topological insulator Bi ₂Se ₃. Low-damping magnetic materials have been widely used in microwave and spintronic applications because of their low energy loss and high sensitivity. While the Gilbert damping constant can reach 10 ^-4 to 10 ^-5 in some insulating ferromagnets, metallic ferromagnets generally have larger damping due to magnon scattering by conduction electrons.
