An experimental study of the canonical SPE (“solid” polymer electrolyte) for rechargeable “rocking chair” lithium/polymer batteries, viz. LiClO4 dissolved in molten poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), was carried out under DOE grant FG02-04ER15573. In this study, an improved understanding was obtained of the relationship between lithium ion transport and polymer behavior in these SPEs. Among other applications, these sturdy temperature-tolerant and powerful light-weight batteries would be used in electric and electric-hybrid vehicles to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, to store unused electrical energy for peak demand loads and as compact, light-weight energy sources for aircraft and spacecraft. Tau mediates microtubule bundle architectures mimicking fascicles of microtubules found in the axon initial segment

Tau, an intrinsically disordered protein confined to neuronal axons, binds to and regulates microtubule dynamics. Although there have been observations of string-like microtubule fascicles in the axon initial segment (AIS) and hexagonal bundles in neurite-like processes in non-neuronal cells overexpressing Tau, cell-free reconstitutions have not replicated either geometry. Here we map out the energy landscape of Tau-mediated, GTP-dependent ‘active’ microtubule bundles at 37°C, as revealed by synchrotron SAXS and TEM. Osmotic consolidation of suspensions and gels

An osmotic method for the consolidation of suspensions of ceramic particles is demonstrated. Concentrated solutions of poly(ethylene oxide) are separated from a suspension of ceramic particles by a semipermeable membrane, creating a gradient in solvent chemical potential. Solvent passes from the suspension into the polymer solution, lowering its free energy and consolidating the suspension. Dispersions of stable 8-nm hydrous zirconia particles were consolidated to over 47% by volume. Suspensions of [alpha]-alumina in three states of aggregation (dispersed, weakly flocculated, and strongly flocculated) were consolidated to densities greater than or equal to those produced in conventional pressure filtration.
