Results of quantum calculations on rotationally and vibrationally inelastic scattering of {sup 1}{ital A}{sub {ital u}}({ital S}{sub 1}) {ital trans}-glyoxal by H{sub 2},He, and Ar({ital E}=80 meV) are presented. For scattering of 0{sup 0} glyoxal and 7{sup 2} glyoxal by H{sub 2}, a quantitative comparison with a recent crossed beam experiment is made. The calculated cross sections for rotationally inelastic scattering are in good agreement with the experimental values, and the trend that {sigma}(7{sup 2}, {ital k}=0{r arrow}7{sup 2}, {ital k}{prime}) falls off faster with {ital k}{prime} than {sigma}(0{sup 0}, {ital k}=0{r arrow}0{sup 0}, {ital k}{prime}) is reproduced. Classical two-dimensional model for rotational-vibrational atom--diatom inelastic scattering

The classical hard ellipse model for atom--diatom rotationally inelastic (RI) collisions is generalized to include simultaneous vibrational excitation by assuming that this excitation is proportional to the square of the component of momentum transferred along the major axis of the ellipse. Calculations are presented which compare level-to-level RI angular distributions of vibrationally elastic (..delta..v = 0) and vibrationally inelastic (..delta..v = 1) scattering. These calculations reproduce the main features observed in recent measurements of level-to-level rovibrationally inelastic scattering for Na/sub 2/ with Ar. Full-dimensional quantum dynamics of CO in collision with H{sub 2}

Inelastic scattering computations are presented for collisions of vibrationally and rotationally excited CO with H{sub 2} in full dimension. The computations utilize a newly developed six-dimensional potential energy surface (PES) and the previously reported four-dimensional V12 PES [P. Jankowski et al., J. Chem. Phys. 138, 084307 (2013)] and incorporate full angular-momentum coupling. At low collision energies, pure rotational excitation cross sections of CO by para-, ortho-, and normal-H{sub 2} are calculated and convolved to compare with recent measurements. We have analyzed high-resolution (FWHM = 0.2 Å) extreme-ultraviolet (EUV, 800-1350 Å) laboratory emission spectra of molecular nitrogen excited by an electron impact at 20 and 100 eV under (mostly) optically thin, single-scattering experimental conditions. A total of 491 emission features were observed from N{sub 2} electronic-vibrational transitions and atomic N I and N II multiplets and their emission cross sections were measured. Details are given of a new type of crossed beam experiment that is designed to study state-resolved vibrationally inelastic scattering of neutral atoms from neutral diatomics or polyatomics. The molecule is initially excited to a selected vibrational level in an excited electronic state by laser pumping. Dispersed fluorescence from molecules that have undergone inelastic scattering is used to observe the final vibrational state distributions. The technique is used here to characterize the vibrationally inelastic scattering of He from each of three initial levels {upsilon}{prime}=15, 25 and 35 within the {ital B}0{sup +}{sub {ital u}} state of I{sub 2}.
