As the basis for a new computational implementation, we assess the calculation of the complex electrical conductivity tensor based on the Kubo–Greenwood (KG) formalism (Kubo, 1957; Greenwood, 1958), with emphasis on derivations and technical aspects pertinent to use of projector augmented wave datasets with plane wave basis sets (Blöchl, 1994). New analytical results and a full implementation of the KG approach in an open-source Fortran 90 post-processing code for use with Quantum Espresso (Giannozzi et al., 2009) are presented. Density-functional calculations of transport properties in the nondegenerate limit and the role of electron-electron scattering

We compute electrical and thermal conductivities of hydrogen plasmas in the non-degenerate regime using Kohn-Sham Density Functional Theory (DFT) and an application of the Kubo- Greenwood response formula, and demonstrate that for thermal conductivity, the mean-field treatment of the electron-electron (e-e) interaction therein is insufficient to reproduce the weak-coupling limit obtained by plasma kinetic theories. An explicit e-e scattering correction to the DFT is posited by appealing to Matthiessen's Rule and the results of our computations of conductivities with the quantum Lenard-Balescu (QLB) equation. Radiation-Induced&quotZero-Resistance State"and the Photon-Assisted Transport

We demonstrate that the radiation-induced ''zero-resistance state'' observed in a two-dimensional electron gas is a result of the nontrivial structure of the density of states of the systems and the photon-assisted transport. A toy model of a quantum tunneling junction with oscillatory density of states in leads catches most of the important features of the experiments. We present a generalized Kubo-Greenwood conductivity formula for the photon-assisted transport in a general system and show essentially the same nature of the transport anomaly in a uniform system.

Electrical conductivity of shocked water from density functional theory.

We present Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations of water in a region of phase space of interest in shock experiments. The onset of electrical conductivity in shocked water is determined by ionic conductivity, with the electron contribution dominating at higher pressures. The ionic contribution to the conduction is calculated from proton diffusion (Green-Kubo formula) and the electronic contribution is calculated using the Kubo-Greenwood formula [1]. The calculations are performed with VASP, a plane-wave pseudopotential code. Calculation of conductivity in the presence of structural defects: Application to spin dependence of conductivity in cobalt

We present a technique which allows the efficient calculation of the electrical conductivity of large systems which retain periodicity in only two dimensions. We use this technique to calculate the nonlocal electrical conductivity of cobalt with stacking faults. These calculations use a realistic first-principles electronic structure and evaluate the conductivity using the Kubo-Greenwood formula with a phenomenological electron lifetime. We find that the change in the electronic structure induced by the stacking faults leads to an enhancement of the spin dependence of the nonlocal electrical conductivity.
