We solve the Dyson-Schwinger equation for the quark propagator in a model with singular infrared behavior for the gluon propagator. We require that the solutions, easily found in configuration space, be tempered distributions and thus have Fourier transforms. This severely limits the boundary conditions that the solutions may satisify. The sign of the dimensionful parameter that characterizes the model gluon propagator can be either positive or negative. If the sign is negative, we find a unique solution. It is singular at the origin in momentum space, falls off like 1/{ital p}{sup 2} as {ital p}{sup 2}{r_arrow}+/{minus}{infinity}, and is truly nonperturbative,more »« less

Bethe-salpeter equation studies of SU{sub f}(3) mesons

The spectroscopy and weak decays of mesons composed of u, d, and s quarks is being studied using a separable approximation to the quark-quark scattering kernel. This is a first, simple step towards an extraction of the form of the quark-quark interaction at small space-like-q{sup 2} directly from experimental observables. The kernel is obtained by using a separable approximation to invert the DSE for the quark propagator. The quark propagator used is the phenomenologically-efficacious, confining model form derived in the study of F{sub {pi}}(q{sup 2}), which is described above. A phenomenological Dyson-Schwinger/Bethe-Salpeter equation approach to QCD, formalized in terms of a QCD-based model field theory, the Global Color-symmetry Model (GCM), was used to calculate the generalized impulse approximation contribution to the electromagnetic pion form factor at space-like q{sup 2} on the domain [0,10] GeV{sup 2}. In effective field theories this form factor is sometimes understood as simply being due to Vector Meson Dominance (VMD) but this does not allow for a simple connection with QCD where the VMD contribution is of higher order than that of the quark core. This paper studies the way in which confinement leads to chiral symmetry breaking (CSB) through a gap equation. We argue that a combination of entropic effects, related to fluctuations of Wilson loops with massless constituents, and an Abelian gauge invariance of the confinement action as expressed in terms of the usual confining effective propagator 8{pi}K{sub F{delta}{mu}{nu}}/k{sup 4}, in effect removes infrared singularities coming from use of this propagator in a standard gap equation (K{sub F} is the string tension). Quark confinement by infrared singularities

Confinement of spin-1/2 quarks by an infrared-singular effective gluon propagator is shown to work in three space dimensions. The exact infrared behavior of the quark propagator is isolated. In the infrared limit the propagator vanishes as the pole moves to infinite energy. The same singular interaction is used as the kernel of the Bethe-Salpeter equation for bound states. The divergence from the kernel exactly cancels the zeros of the propagator to produce an infrared-finite bound-state equation. The cancellation occurs only when the kernel has the form of a generalized instantaneous Coulomb interaction. The existence of confined solutions is demonstrated.
