Crystal field levels and magnetic anisotropy in the kagome compounds ${Nd}_{3} {Sb}_{3} {Mg}_{2} O_{14}$ , ${Nd}_{3} {Sb}_{3} {Zn}_{2} O_{14}$ , and $\Pr_{3} {Sb}_{3} {Mg}_{2} O_{14}$

Here, we report the crystal field levels of several newly discovered rare-earth kagome compounds: Nd ₃Sb ₃Mg ₂O ₁₄, Nd ₃Sb ₃Zn ₂O ₁₄, and Pr ₃Sb ₃Mg ₂O ₁₄. We determine the crystal electric field (CEF) Hamiltonian by fitting to neutron scattering data using a point charge Hamiltonian as an intermediate fitting step. The fitted Hamiltonians accurately reproduce bulk susceptibility measurements, and the results indicate easy-axis ground-state doublets for Nd ₃Sb ₃Mg ₂O ₁₄ and Nd ₃Sb ₃Zn ₂O ₁₄ and a singlet ground state for Pr ₃Sb ₃Mg ₂O ₁₄. Atomically imaged crystal structure and normal-state properties of superconducting $C a_{10} P t_{4} A s_{8} {({(F e_{1 - x} P t_{x})}_{2} A s_{2})}_{5}$

Superconducting Ca ₁₀Pt ₄As ₈(Fe ₂As ₂) ₅ is rare because optimal superconducting transition temperature is achieved without chemical doping or pressure. Furthermore, the unclear crystal structure limits our ability to understand the structure-property relationship. Using atomically resolved scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction, we directly determine the structure of this superconductor: it forms a monoclinic structure (space group P2 ₁/n) with lattice parameters a = b = 8.76Å, c = 20.18Å, and γ = 90.5°. Due to outstanding room temperature electron mobility, the wide-gap perovskite semiconductor BaSnO ₃ is of high current interest. Although n doping with Sb and O vacancies has been reported, most work has focused solely on La doping. Here we report bulk single crystals of Ba _1–xR _xSnO _3–δ with R = La,Pr, and Nd, as well as unintentionally doped BaSnO _3–δ, thus exploring new rare earth (magnetic) dopants in addition to O vacancy doping.
