Ionic liquid structure, dynamics, and electrosorption in carbon electrodes with bimodal pores and heterogeneous surfaces

In this paper, we investigate the aggregation, diffusion, and resulting electrochemical behavior of ionic liquids inside carbon electrodes with complex pore architectures and surface chemistries. Carbide-derived carbons (CDCs) with bimodal porosities and defunctionalized or oxidized electrode surfaces served as model electrode materials. Our goal was to obtain a fundamental understanding of room-temperature ionic liquid ion orientation, mobility, and electrosorption behavior. Neat 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide confined in CDCs was studied using an integrated experimental and modeling approach, consisting of quasielastic neutron scattering, small-angle neutron scattering, X-ray pair distribution function analysis, and electrochemical measurements, which were combined with molecular dynamics simulations. A Hierarchical Nanoporous Diamondoid Superstructure

Sophisticated architectures assembled from a single class of subunits by cooperative interactions are ubiquitous in nature. The construction of their artificial mimics, however, remains one of the most formidable challenges facing synthetic chemists. In this work, we introduce a hierarchical diamondoid superstructure—namely, a supramolecular diamond—that is constructed from the multiple-level self-assembly of a highly symmetrical salt, hexakis[(4,4'-bipyridin-1-ium)methylene]benzene hexafluorophosphate. The uniform octahedral single crystals, with 96 cationic organic fragments and 96 counteranions in a unit cell, can be prepared quantitatively in a controllable one-step procedure within seconds at ambient conditions. Current microfabrication of micro–supercapacitors often involves multistep processing and delicate lithography protocols. In this study, simple fabrication of an asymmetric MXene–based micro–supercapacitor that is flexible, binder–free, and current–collector–free is reported. Here, the interdigitated device architecture is fabricated using a custom–made mask and a scalable spray coating technique onto a flexible, transparent substrate. The electrode materials are comprised of titanium carbide MXene (Ti ₃C ₂T _x) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO), which are both 2D layered materials that contribute to the fast ion diffusion in the interdigitated electrode architecture.
