Abstract

The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) requires beam position monitors (BPMs) with 50 nm spatial resolution for alignment of the beam line elements in the main linac and beam delivery system. Furthermore, the BPMs must be able to make multiple independent measurements within a single 156 ns long bunch train. CBETA 4-pass Orbit Correction and Tolerance Study (CBETA Machine Note #037)

The main goal of this study is to find the tolerance of the CBETA FFAG lattice subjected to various errors. Common error sources include non-ideal magnet positioning and alignment, undesired multipole field strengths, and BPM offsets. In order to fix the beam trajectories (orbits) affected by the errors, dipole kickers have been allocated throughout the FFAG beamline to serve as correctors. First tests of electron beam transport in the CBETA S1 splitter line

In May, 2018, the Cornell-University Brookhaven-National-Laboratory Energy-Recovery-Linac Test Accelerator (CBETA) fired its first electron beam tests using the first pass (S1) splitter line and first girder of the return loop (FA). At various locations on the S1 Line and FA section, the positions of the electron beam were recorded using ten Beam-Position-Monitors (BPMs) as the strength of the steering and focusing electromagnets were varied. Datasets from these tests contain measurements of beam position during magnet scans for the following beam momenta: 38, 42, 47, and 53MeV.

New beam position processing electronics for the Linear Accelerator allow faster feedback and processing of both positron and electron bunch positions in a single machine pulse. More than 30 electron-positron beam position monitors (epBPMs) have been installed at SLAC in various applications and have met all design requirements. The SLC production electron bunch follows the positron bunch down the linac separated by 58.8 nS. The epBPM measures the position of both bunches with an accuracy of better than 5 {mu}m at nominal operating intensities.
