Title: 500 Wh/Kg Batteries with fluoride conversion cathodes and LiPON-Protected Li Anodes (Final Report)

Abstract

The objective of this project is to research, develop, and demonstrate a Li-C@LiPON/Fe 1.0-yM yOF battery supported by fluorinated functional liquid electrolytes capable of achieving an energy density ≥500 Wh/Kg while achieving a 1,000-cycle life. The PIs developed an all-fluorinated electrolyte that can suppress Li dendrite and achieve 99.2% of coulumbic efficiency for Li plating/stripping by forming LiF-rich SEI on Li anode. The electrolyte can also stabilize the modified Fe 0.9Co 0.1F 3 cathode to reach energy density of >1000 Wh/kg. Using porous carbon as a Li host and coating with ORNL’s LiPON further enhanced Li plating/stripping efficiency by restricting Li volume change to less than 20%.
