Spatial Distribution of Resonance in the Velocity Field for Transonic Flow over a Rectangular Cavity

Pulse-burst particle image velocimetry (PIV) has been used to acquire time-resolved data at 37.5 kHz of the flow over a finite-width rectangular cavity at Mach 0.8. Power spectra of the PIV data reveal four resonance modes that match the frequencies detected simultaneously using high-frequency wall pressure sensors but whose magnitudes exhibit spatial dependence throughout the cavity. Spatio-temporal cross-correlations of velocity to pressure were calculated after bandpass filtering for specific resonance frequencies. Cross-correlation magnitudes express the distribution of resonance energy, revealing local maxima and minima at the edges of the shear layer attributable to wave interference between downstream- and upstream-propagating disturbances.more »« less

An investigation of subsonic transverse jet injection into a subsonic vitiated crossflow is discussed. The reacting jet in crossflow (RJIC) system investigated as a means of secondary injection of fuel in a staged combustion system. The measurements were performed in test rigs featuring (a) a steady, swirling crossflow and (b) a crossflow with low swirl but significant oscillation in the pressure field and in the axial velocity. Polarization-Directed Surface Plasmon Polariton Launching

The relative intensities of propagating surface plasmons (PSPs) simultaneously launched from opposing edges of a symmetric trench structure etched into a silver thin film may be controllably varied by tuning the linear polarization of the driving field. This is demonstrated through transient multiphoton photoemission electron microscopy measurements performed using a pair of spatially separated phase-locked femtosecond pulses. Our measurements are rationalized using finite-difference time domain simulations, which reveal that the coupling efficiency into the PSP modes is inversely proportional to the magnitude of the localized surface plasmon fields excited at the trench edges. Backscatter particle image velocimetry via optical time-of-flight sectioning

Conventional particle image velocimetry (PIV) configurations require a minimum of two optical access ports, inherently restricting the technique to a limited class of flows. Here, the development and application of a novel method of backscattered time-gated PIV requiring a single-optical-access port is described along with preliminary results. The light backscattered from a seeded flow is imaged over a narrow optical depth selected by an optical Kerr effect (OKE) time gate. The picosecond duration of the OKE time gate essentially replicates the width of the laser sheet of conventional PIV by limiting detected photons to a narrow time-of-flight within the flow.more »« less

Spatial distribution of pressure resonance in compressible cavity flow

The development of the unsteady pressure field on the floor of a rectangular cavity was studied at Mach 0.9 using high-frequency pressure-sensitive paint. Power spectral amplitudes at each cavity resonance exhibit a spatial distribution with a streamwise-oscillatory pattern; additional maxima and minima appear as the mode number is increased. This spatial distribution also appears in the propagation velocity of modal pressure disturbances. This behavior was tied to the superposition of a downstream-propagating shear-layer disturbance and an upstream-propagating acoustic wave of different amplitudes and convection velocities, consistent with the classical Rossiter model.
