Abstract

The current state of water treatment in GSA buildings is to use conventional chemical maintenance for water quality and contract out this specialized service, for a fixed fee, to a third-party company specializing in such service. Traditional water treatment approaches rely on chemicals to extend the ability of the water to hold scaling minerals in suspension and kill off biological growth. This project assesses the effectiveness of three different technologies provided by three different manufacturers. Each system uses some sort of proprietary device, technology, or chemical. This report addresses both water and cost savings associated with Alternative Water Treatment (AWT) technologies, and the water quality provided by the AWT technologies.

GSA Guidance - Alternative Water Treatment Systems for Cooling Towers

Between 2014 and 2017, GSA's average water rates nationwide increased 41%. Rapidly escalating costs, mandated water-reduction targets, and the fact that on average, 28% of commercial office-building water use is associated with heating and cooling led the GSA Proving Ground (GPG) to select six alternative water treatment (AWT) technologies for in-field validation. AWT technologies claim significant reductions in the amount of water consumed by chilled water plant cooling towers, which provide cooling for 80% of GSA floor space. This report summarizes the first four evaluations, which were evaluated by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL).

The Silver Bullet alternative water treatment (AWT) technology is a non-chemical-based cooling tower water treatment technology. Ozone is a potential alternative to chlorine and proprietary chemicals for treating cooling tower circulating water systems at electric power plants. This study surveyed air conditioning cooling tower systems which have used ozone treatment for the past few years.
