Forward Osmosis-based System for Treatment of Waste Water Generated During Energy Production Using Waste Carbon Dioxide and Waste Heat

For this project, we performed initial studies investigating the feasibility of a system that would capture carbon dioxide from post-combustion flue gas and use the CO2 to drive the treatment of wastewater. Our system can remove carbon dioxide for storage (as pure CO2) using low-grade waste heat from the power plant to power the process. As an additional benefit, our system can provide clean water for reuse in the plant where the purification process is driven by carbon dioxide. The COHO (CO2-H2O) system uses a breakthrough forward osmosis membrane developed by Porifera in combination with a recyclable draw solvent developed by Idaho National Laboratory to efficiently treat wastewater and consume carbon dioxide. With this research, we determined that COHO is able to capture up to 75% of a power plant’s CO2 emissions if supplying and treating the boiler water feed. The installation of COHO at a power plant will (1) reduce wastewater volumes, (2) reduce the energy costs to treat wastewater, (3) expand the capabilities of water treatment all while (4) reducing the cost of carbon capture from flue gas.
